Grammatical Conundrum: ." or ". or .".

For what it's worth, a quick exploration of my book collection* revealed the following:

Authors with books that put the full stop inside the quotes:
Stephen Fry, Umberto Eco, PG Wodehouse, Douglas Adams, Alan Coren, Bill Bryson, Terry Pratchett.

Authors with books that put the full stop outside the quotes:
Lynne Truss [you know, the populist poster-person for proper punctuation. And alliteration, it would appear :D]

Obviously, however, one has to consider that publishers may typeset their books for the US market.
