Ok, first off a big thanks to all who entered, secondly thanks to glitch for judging, he really did more than he needed to, thanks
Below are the results from his judging:
Thesnipergecko - The background scenery is interesting, the car itself less so. No real sense of movement, although this might be unintentional, and the faked blur makes the main subject uncomfortable to look at. Ultimately it’s a decent panoramic photo spoiled by an out of focus Mazda in the middle of it.
rhymin - I want to like this, I really do. The bodywork on the Italia is sumptuous and the reflections are almost uncanny. However, once you’ve seen that you start to look around the rest of the photo and the illusion is shattered. Compositionally it’s nothing special and the jarring mix of photo-realism and lower-quality scenery ultimately rule this one out.
Digitalle - Not sure what’s happened here as it’s horrifically low-res and that in itself rules this one out. It screams ‘computer game’ to me and photographically it’s nothing to write home about.
Dyson - The subject is slap-bang in the middle of the frame which somewhat spoils the whole composition and nothing about the image as a whole is fooling me into thinking this is a photograph. And there’s something odd about the bodywork of that Panda - I know the red ones went pink over time, but the reflections just look wrong.
bigjimmyauk - Now we’re talking. This has been well thought out and executed and is one of the stand-out images on show here. Compositionally it’s a very strong image and I think most motorsport photographers would be pleased with their day’s work if they came away from a session with this one in the bag. Unfortunately it loses a few points for having been selectively coloured, but it wasn’t that which ultimately swung the vote against it. Whoever did this should be very pleased with their efforts.
Clarkson - A nice image and another well thought out composition, but the mixture of photo-realism and jarring low-res textures rule this one out of the running. I can’t help but look at that mountain in the background and think someone’s just plonked it in the frame with no regard for the rest of the image as a whole. it’s certainly got the dynamism of a great motorsport photo, but it’s not got the quality.
ak22 - Not really sure what I’m supposed to be looking at here. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time to set the shot up this way, but it’s doing nothing for me in the slightest.
RenoRanes007 - Nice idea, but the execution doesn’t quite match up. Everything is just a little too static and boring and I really want to be higher up above the Camper so I can see the trail the tyres have left and really feel the movement. As it is I’m left wondering if it really has just drifted around that bend or if it’s just setting off and the engine has backfired. And the sterile advertising boards in the background ruin any sense of realism, which is a shame.
G-MAN2004 - This entrant obviously knows what he’s doing and we probably have our first example of a real car photo rather than a photo of a car. Unfortunately the image isn’t sharp where I want it to be sharp and my eye isn’t drawn into the frame and instead is left to wander around, picking out the sharply-focused sections bit by bit. Almost there, but not quite.
Logan_Tnt - At first glance this looks amazing and then you look again and see that there are numerous issues with the shot. I’m not sure if there’s some sort of blur filter applied badly here, but something odd is going on with the bodywork from the headlights down to the door and beyond - it’s not pleasant to the eye. Unfortunately on this one, the background looks more real than the car and I can’t suspend my disbelief long enough to want to like it.
Paddyqwerty1 - A very good attempt, but not a winner I’m afraid. I like the idea but I’m not taken in by it and I can’t shake the feeling I’m looking at a photo of a car in a computer game. The blurring effect that has been applied doesn’t work in this instance and without a single point of focus the image lacks impact and suffers from feeling a little flat.
hyperzed - A good idea, spoiled by a low resolution image that screams ‘computer game’ to me. I’m also not a fan of this blue filter that appears to have been laid over the image and overall this one leaves me feeling somewhat cold. A nice idea, but badly executed.
dcmg - Part of me loves this, part of me hates it, and it’s that indecision that rules this one out for me. I love the composition and I can just picture the car rocketing off down that road, but the horrible banding on the bodywork is enough to distract me and remind that, ultimately, this isn’t real. A shame really, as it so almost gets away with it.
skippi90 - Almost a gem. If only the framing were a little more complimentary to the action going on inside it, this might have edge the eventual winner. The composition is mostly spot-on and the choice of focal point and use of blur really pulls the eye towards the subject matter, but it does feel like a little toy car and not a large piece of metal. It also lacks a sense of movement and space for the car to have come from and to move into. A landscape crop would have worked out better for this one, but it’s still a damn good effort.
Mark A - I can forgive the slightly low-res roof of the tunnel. I can forgive the distracting blue-ish white blobs in the background. And I can forgive the composition being slightly off where I’d ideally want the car placed. And I can forgive all that because even now, I’m still having trouble distinguishing that shot of a TT from reality. If I saw that in a glossy magazine I wouldn’t have thought twice. Hell, it could even be a grab from an Audi advert. Absolutely stunning and the winner by a country mile.
K1LLSW1TCH - Alas, it’s the blurring that ruins this one for me. It makes the image lose all sense of scale and it starts to feel like a toy car on a static backdrop. If only the bodywork was sharp and there was a defined focal point, this could have been in with a shout of winning. As it is, it’s not for me I’m afraid.
Whappers - The best thing about this is the reflections on the bodywork of the Veyron. The worst are the lacklustre shadows, lack of detail in the setting itself and the unrealistic composition - I can’t shake the feeling that nobody is going to get a car like that airborne, and it’s that which ruins the impact of this image and puts it firmly in the ‘grab from a video game’ camp.
V R - Unfortunately this just doesn’t look real enough nor is it composed well enough for it to fool me into thinking it’s a photo of an actual Lamborghini. It could almost pass for a still from a video, but it’s not really grabbing my attention. There are also far too many distracting elements in the frame (block in the bottom right, tree in the top left) for my eye to settle, and that’s what ultimately undoes this one for me.
Dutch Guy - As with the shot of the Mercedes earlier, something seems to have gone wrong with the focusing here or you’ve applied a blur filter that hasn’t worked. My eye is drawn to Red Bull aeroplane and not the car, and ultimately this shot ought to be all about the Zonda and not what’s in the background.
DirtyRaver - Interesting setting, unusual composition, but spoiled by the out of focus Volvo in the bottom right. It could have been saved by having the front of the car in focus, but unfortunately it hasn’t been. And again, points lost for selective colouring, which just doesn’t work for a subject like this.
So I will add the winner on PSN. Thanks to all who entered.
