Grande Punto - Your Opinions

I'm not gonna get that much off it anyway.

You're right.

Because you've put a deposit down, the dealer knows you have every intention of giving them the asking price and no intention of waiting for another to come up if it's no good.

They won't be adding any extras, they'll play down any flaws and refuse to take any money off.

If you can, phone up and say you want your deposit back. Plead poverty, givethem a sob story about a family situation that prevents you from buying the car. Then, turn up at the dealer and hope they don't recognize your voice

Did the one you find have the T-Jet engine in the end? Is it a Sporting also?

TBH the T-Jet is a slightly different kettle of fish to the standard 1.2 and 1.4. There aren't a huge number of them out there and dealers know this, they don't need to bend over too far on price to sell them as they are somewhat in demand by those that have any interest at all in driving.

If you are happy with the price and all is well when you go and see it then best of luck with it.

b) Its a 58 plate car. It's barely 2 years old. Unless somebody has dropped it off a lorry its hard not to be a good example, surely they all are.

Not in this sector. I've seen 2 year old examples with more scratches and dents than our two cars with a combined age of 20 years put together :p

Went to view the car today and loved it. I paid the deposit.

I paid £100 under the asking price but they have agreed also to do the following:

- Refurb 2 front alloys as they have slight scuffs
- Paint a scratch on rear bumper
- Fix a small clip on parcel shelf
- Get a small dent out of the drivers door
- Replace rear top mounts as they were a little creaky
- Fill it up with petrol
- Include 6 months tax as the car isn't taxed
- 12 month warranty
- Full valet and polish
- Service it as it is due

The engine, clutch and gearbox were all silky smooth and I loved how it drove. Very quick.

I'm happy. Can post pics if people are interested.

I only heard it once and that's when I went over a speed bump at an odd angle a little quickly. I still insisted they changed them though. They said wouldn't cost them much to do so they'll do it.

What made you diagnose it as top mounts, out of interest? Seems like an unusual thing to be causing the squeek at that age and mileage?

Well, the noise came from the back of the car and the guy said it was a common fault. He took me out in his diesel and it made the same noise but only if you go too quick over rough ground, he said his is booked to get them changed as well.

Mine used to do that too, the body flexing a bit. Dealer said it was the rear seats causing flexability in the car, they sorted it though so didn't ask too much about it. As mine got past the 3 year warranty it came back, never bother getting it sorted though but instead px it for a Civic and they never drove my GP so didn't tell them about it.

I've sold my GP sporting now (m-jet) but any questions fire away. Hope you enjoy it, I know I miss mine and its quirks :)

THen I will take it back and make them fix it. There are some speed bumps right outside their garage I can try it on, and they said if it done it after I took it, it would be covered under their 12 month warranty anyway.

(Haven't obviously picked the car up yet).

Noises like that are often not covered.

Re test the car before you sign on collection. If you take it away with that noise it will never ever get fixed.

More importantly, what rear top mounts? Not seen top mounts at the back of a FIAT hatch since the Uno.

They're in the boot, under the carpet.

I suspect this will be a warranty item, they had juddery clutches quite early on which were also replaced under warranty.

I had an 08 MJet Grande Punto in stock which I ordered new for my uncle (He's a driving instructor) and once he'd done over 60k (warranty expiry) I sell it on for him - this car had a new clutch under warranty at just under 60k because it juddered slightly.

Well, on the warranty front I can only go by what he said, and he and the manager said it would be covered.

His word on what is covered is worth exactly 'squat', if it ain't written down then it is completely deniable.

Also don't bother with a full valet, their monkeys will do more damage to the paintwork than good. More than likely using a dirty scouring pads or maybe even steel wool :p

I got done the same way when I got my Mums Z4. I noticed the roof squeeked when down. Mentioned it, they said it was somethingorother and it would be sorted. Collected car, asked if everything had been sorted, they said yes. The squeek was still there. Went back in to have a few bits sorted, they still couldnt fix the squeek.

The dealer was 200 miles away and it then turned out that squeeks and rattles are not covered under the BMW AUC warranty so... it still squeeks.

Moral of story: Unless its 100%, dont drive it away.
