I want to upgrade my old man's card to something better. At the moment he has an ati x850xt on pci-express thats on it's last legs. What would be a good upgrade for £50< ?

Hi. I imagine that at <£50 you're unlikely to have to worry about power limitations. :-)

FWIW I've just swapped the old, silently cooled x800xt from this machine (x2 3800) and replaced it with a 8800GTS 320Mb (a more 'power-hungry' card than the more efficient 8800GT), and this has taken the machine's power requirements (measured via a power meter) up by about 30-50W depending on what's going on.

Peak power usage during a video benchmark (the monitor isn't included in the measurement)) is running at about 280W on a Zalman 400W supply.

None of this will help you directly, but it might help give you a rough idea what you can get away with.
