Howdy :)

I managed to bag a b-grade Dell Inspiron 1520 the other day.
Decent enough spec - 2Ghz c2d, 2GB, 8600mGT etc..

I'd already read that the 8600mGT overclocked quite well, so set off to see just how high I could push it!

Default clocks are 475 on the GPU, and 400 on the GDDR2.

I used nTune to monitor temps, ATItool to check for artifacts, and rivatuner to increase the clocks.. and got some pretty nice results :p

After benching 3dmark06 on a loop, the GPU peaked at a cool 67C

The results:

Now, I can max out Bioshock without any chug whatsoever, and I can add AA on to most newer titles. Switching between stock and OC clocks is easy:

I know the 8600mGT isn't exactly high end, but I paid peanuts for this laptop, and now it'll play every game I throw at it (bar crysis ;)) without compromising on IQ. Get OC'ing your laptop's graphics!

are you using a bios that has the fan kick in earlier or faster?

Stock bios.. tbh, I haven't actually heard the fan yet! Tho, my last lappy was a 2.8 P4 that idled at 754735743C ;)

I've uninstalled the benchmark apps now, but ATItool reached the same 67C peak :)

Very nice results there, are you able to push the memory any higher, as I seem to remember from some other reviews the memory being able to go higher?

nope :/

I don't notice any artifacts in-game with higher ram clocks, but atitool artifacts straight away with 10mhz more.

most people get ~480 - 500, so my 520mhz clock is pretty good :)

It's my GPU clock I was most impressed with.. 40% more performance for free
