Great Home media device, but how is it powerful enough to play HD?

Hi all,

I've seen a product which does the following, but I wondered how good the CPU in it must be to enable it to play HD content, unless i'm missing something?!

Al-Tech Mediagate MG-350HD Wireless 500GB High Definition Digital Media Adapter Player

Is it really so hard to make a reasonably well-equipped media adapter/set-top box that you wouldn't be completely ashamed to put in your living room? Al Tech's MediaGate MG-350HD has an Ethernet & Wireless 11G Connection, an internal 3.5-inch hard drive, a USB 2.0 port, DVI, RCA composite, S-video, and component outs, optical/coax and analogue stereo 5.1 audio out, oh, and codec support for MP3, OGG, WMA, MPEG-1/2/4, DivX 3.11+, and XviD. Bonus: the MG-350HD has a USB 2.0 host port (for an external hard drive, for instance), integrated 802.11a/g, and MPEG1/2/4 and WMV9 in hi-def (720p and 1080i).

Main Functions:

*

MEDIAGATE MG-350HD is a high-performed, Digital Media Adapter (DMA) with a Hard Disk Drive inside.
*

The MG-35 has a 10/100 Ethernet port & Wireless 802.11G connections so home PCs in the same subnet can be easily accessed.
*

The MG-350HD has a built-in 500GB 3.5-inch Hitachi HDD which provides enough space for storing digital movies.
*

The MG-35 has a USB2.0 slave port. It provides an alternative way to download digital contents from the PC.
*

Also has a USB2.0 host port. Thus USB storage devices can be attached and the stored content can be played directly
*

The MG-35 can be configured in collaboration with web-based movie distributor as a set-top box or media gateway to access, play and/or download the legal movies from the website directly without home PC.
*

Supports MPEG-2, MPEG-4, ISMA MPEG-4, MPEG4 and WMV9 over MPEG-2 transport and WMV9 streaming

It doesn't support MPEG4 AVC (H264), which is far more CPU-intensive. You may also find that it only accepts HD MPEG2 files (as some players do).

right, so thats a different HD Codec for compressed HD content. So it does play MPEG2 HD which is what the format of HD-DVDs are right?

The format of hd-dvd is either vc1 or h.264.

I wonder if the CPU in this device is of a different architecture to x86 ones etc though and can play HD differently? Is that an option?

I have the non HD version of this (The MG-35) and it is quite a nice device. The interface is not superb but the general working of this rocks. I have this streaming media from my synology DS-106e NAS box and basically have my video library on one box and this thing playing it. Doesn't even need a hard drive in there to work.
One of my fave purchases.

To the original poster, you may want to hold off purchasing for the mo and see what the new products coming from tvix are like. They are the m4100sh and 5100 sh. "The TVIX m4100sh supports H.264/X.264 and HDMI and it will be released
at the end of this April."

is quoted from the manufacturers...
