Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14 - 15th December 2013]

Crazy game. No denying City were the better team but it feels like we were on the wrong end of some terrible decisions. 2 perfectly good goals disallowed and a penalty turned down. Thought their penalty was very soft too, Milner kicked the ball too far so dragged his foot into Chesney. Ah well, just need to get a result against Chelsea.

Wow, some Arsenal fans are throwing in the title race now...before xmas.
Arsenal still lead the table.
They are immensely talented.
Have won many games.
Come on Arsenal fans - dont give up on your team, who are currently leading the table.

If I were a betting man, Chelsea would be my faves for the title, if only because they have the best manager in the World managing them. Arsenal would be my 2nd faves to win the title, as they have a good set of players who are playing well together. Man City 3rd.

City, Arsenal, Chelsea for me.

I agree though that Arsenal still have a far better chance than most people seem to give them.

Edit: That said, we can go second if we beat Spurs tomorrow! Can't see it happening though. We always lose to Spurs :(

I could see a result like this happening, one result isn't a big deal but Arsenal seem mentally fragile (as Wenger admitted against us), so could start struggling at any time.

I think that Arsenal's problem is a bit like Liverpool's. When a team sets out to stop them playing and they aren't really at it, they'll struggle.

Liverpool falter against slightly weaker teams when this happens. If Hull, for instance, tried to stop Arsenal playing they're good enough to cut through them, whereas Liverpool won't. Both teams will struggle against the big boys though if the likes of City, Utd, Chelsea set out with the goal of preventing them playing their football.

Today's game was a bit of an anomaly, as it was City stopping Arsenal playing for large chunks of the game coupled with some defensive aberrations from Arsenal.

What's interesting this season is that you have Arsenal, who have been flattening the "weaker" teams, up against City and Chelsea who are doing well against the big sides but dropping relatively easy points. It just depends on how many points Chelsea and City drop against the lesser teams that will determine where the title goes.

City have just beaten both Bayern Munich and Arsenal. Silva is back and now you look at a team playing well, and yet put then behind Chelsea?

I don't see it so far - the classic 'lolArsenal' stuff hit it's peak when we had a young team and were bleeding our best players out. We had a bit of a rebuilding job in the last couple of years and from the good run we had last season (and ignoring the Villa defeat) onwards we've looked much more capable. We're back on the up (at least), it's just there are still teams that are better than us, City being the most obvious. When was the last time we were 1st in the league, even if it is only marginal now? I think we'll be consistent enough to finish strongly this year, probably not enough to win the league but I genuinely feel like we can attract better players now rather than having to sell our own ones.

Arsenal's weakness is the xmas/post xmas couple months where the tough fixture schedule gets to us, injuries/tiredness cause point after point to be dropped.

Arsenal were no where near the top last season after the best final what 13 games or something, why, because of the points we dropped in our "bad" period.

The team currently looks tired and lifeless, and has looked worse game by game for 6 weeks or more.

but we now have Chelsea, then West Ham and Newcastle VERY close to each other, with players who haven't had any rests so far. Then we have Cardiff on new years which should be an easy game in theory, but after 5-6 very tough games in a very very tough december, for players who haven't had a rest, becomes a tough game.

It was always for me the Everton, City, Chelsea, West Ham, Newcastle, Cardiff games that would make or break our season and as yet we've taken 1 point of 6, in the earliest stage of that run, when our players are the least tired....... which doesn't bode well.

What a cracking game of football that was. Absolutely fantastic for the neutrals. :D

Hoping for some more later.

Agree, although a big admirer of Wenger I quite like seeing the smugness wiped off their fans for a game or two.

It's kind of a tradition that Arsenal collapse at Christmas/January. How many times have they looked good in 3 or 4 competitons for it all to then fall apart. I think that will happen again, I still don't think they have enough quality in the side to maintain a title challenge.

Who they get in january is probably even more crucial than who Manu get.

Ozil refusing to go over to the Arsenal fans and Mertersaker giving him a *******ing :D

I know Mertesacker was probably a bit emotional but that's not the best thing to do on TV. Should be private. Will only make Ozil look bad, and then Wenger got put in a tough spot.

Torres scored....... crap defending. Willian with a decent shot from outside the box, hits the post, Torres reacts, the defence didn't AT ALL, till way way way too late. Painfully simple goal for Torres.

Sometimes as an Arsenal fan you just have to shake your head.

Yep, especially when you have a keeper that really should have kept his mouth shut ;).

The Spurs vs Liverpool game tomorrow is going to be massive especially as Chelski are winning.

This season has been mental so far.

I think expecting anything other than a loss for Palace at Chelsea would be er... well, lol.
