Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th Dec 2011 - 4th Jan 2012]

Who are these people? :p

Pretty sure he has been punished by doing such though, IIRC one of Bayern's goals was a consequence and when Kompany got sent off (cant remember what game it was) it was a result of Hart's mistake

Man Utd fans when I criticised De Gea for spilling a shot straight at him :p ;)

And it was a general point. I can't think of a time that Hart's parried a shot out in front of him and got punished, and unless the ball goes in the back of the net, it doesn't get highlighted.

Nobody is going to talk about Hart spilling that shot right at the end (when Maxi nearly scored the rebound) for instance.

Just back from the Spurs vs West Brom game.

West Brom really do the most horrible, cynical brand of football in the Premier League. :( 11 men in their 1/3 (not even half) of the pitch for most of the game, time-wasting at every opportunity and the most blatant professional fouls any time that there was even a hint of a Spurs break.

I'd rather see my team try to play attractive football and go down.

tbf at the moment I do have trouble naming who actually is the best keeper in the world because like I said in the Premier League the standard has been pretty poor.

It's definitely not Hart though :p

Chamberlain would have been a much better bet for Liverpool than Downing. Okay maybe he wouldn't be able to play every game and his games would have to be monitored but at least you'd have a player not only capable to actually doing something but you'd also have a player with genuine potential for the future. Downing will be replaced in a year or two and be a squad player at best imo

Downing (or similar) had to be signed because we signed Carroll in January. Carroll was never worth £35m but without a wide player that's going to put crosses into the box, he's worth even less.

Unlike others, I'm still hopeful that Carroll will come good (not £35m good but he was never going to be). Downing on the other hand, while not as bad as some make out, has less time to prove himself and looks less likely to do so.

Until we get back into the CL, we're going to struggle to attract the top class players and need to buy players a step or 2 down, in an attempt to get us back to where we want to be. When we get back into the CL, some of those players will be replace. Downing's the best example of that type of player.

If we get back!

Dalglish is going to have to spend big in January and hope any new signing works if he doesn't want to be remembered as a flop the second time around. He's spent £110 million since rejoining us and we're only 4 points better off than we were at this stage last season. I'd argue the team he inherited had a better attack than the team he's built and I'm not confident he can fix it.

4 points? well, well, well king kenny and £110m well spent. still, only half way through the season, it can all change.

The thing is Spurs have got where they are without spending hundreds of millions and the players they have bought weren't attracted to them because of Champions League football. That's why I mentioned Chamberlain, a player very much in the same mould of a Lennon and Bale i.e. plucked from a Championship side.

In reality, we've spent ~£30m, lowered our wage bill and we're 9 points better off, not 4, than last season (17 points if seasonised it). To put that into perspective, take 17 points off from where we finished last season and we'd have been 16th not 6th.

We're 3 points off 4th and have the easiest 2nd half of the season than all our rivals. It's not that bad.

FT 3-2 Madrid, said 4-2 but I was right about the comeback (and they had an goal disallowed right at the very end lol). Some ridiculous skills in that game, if La Liga's top 2 were martial arts characters, Barca would be Ip Man and Madrid would be Tony Jaa or something.

Highlight of the game for me was the look of sheer disdain Kompany gave Carroll after he went down in the area, as if to say "you worthless piece of ****, I am not even going to bother telling you to get up" :D

I think Krul has probably been the outstanding keeper in the league this season

I've been most impressed by Vorm, 9 clean sheets (more than any other keeper in the entire league) for a newly promoted team is no mean feat, a lot of great saves in there too.

Actually Spurs HAVE spent that sort of money, since Abramovich took over at Chelsea they have spent over £300m (well in excess of £100m net - that's more than Manchester United and Arsenal for example).

Even if you look at the current squad (ignoring flops that have been sold at a loss) there are some big buys in there, e.g. Modric, Pavlechenko and Defoe all cost £14m+

Yeah I was thinking more in terms of their current squad and not all those that have been bought and sold in-between.

Would be interested to see the current cost of the Spurs squad compared with that of the Liverpool one (not for a see what you could have had reason though obviously as you cant pick up a Bale, Lennon or Modric for what Spurs paid)

I think keeping this season has been incredibly good in general. Reina today excluded :D

Nice to see Liverpool turned up tonight and actually bothered to play

I guess the whole senior squad was suspended rather than just Saurez (I cant imagine the kids doing worse after all)
