This has happened a few times now, normally only happens when I floor it and shift up from 2nd to 3rd :p, but coming home just then I changed up to be met yet again with a grinding (happened a couple of weeks ago), why is it doing this it's only happening from 2nd to 3rd never happened in any other gear. I'm really hoping it's not a synchro :(

Same problem with my car and it is the synchro, will be able to be fixed under warranty but this is the second time it's gone!

I get this too, only at really high RPM. I've been told to change the gearbox oil before messing with syncro's etc.

What's the likelihood it could just be bad oil?. I'm not sure when it was last changed tbh. I've had the car almost a year now?

As said 2nd to 3rd synchro. Guess the person you got the car off liked to rag it :p

Bought it off a couple was used as a family car so I wouldn't of suspected them, they didn't seem like the type hmm.

Any reason why it only does it @ high RPM?.

If it's started to grind, it's probably on it's way out. Changing the oil could prolong the life but the damage has been done.
It's the 'baulk rings' that slow the gears down ready for the syncro to engage.
The baulk rings rely on friction to work, so the oil condition, and type of oil determin the friction.
When the rings are worn and can't slow down the next gear(harder when shifting fast), the syncro will grind before engaging.
Also, if the cluch is dragging abit, it would show up most on the weakest gear.

yeh, mine used to crunch going in to 2nd if i was driving hard

I found chaning the oil (for some good 75w80) helped almost totally eliminate this...

However, a few months later, the box did go pop - but then I'm on my 4th one and the JB series of gearboxes (Renault) aren't exactly known for their strength :p

Does the car pop out of gear at all? thats normally another sign...

Like he said, does it go in smooth but grind or do you need to force it abit, then it grindes?

Went in smooth but still grind.

Hardly ever have this problem it's only at high revs I've had it so far and when im giving it some.

As in it didnt want to go into gear with the clutch depressed.

That's just the synchro's doing their job then. Most cars will do that with 1st gear all the time unless you're completely stopped. Match the revs better so that the syncrho's aren't so loaded and then it will go into that 3rd gear easier.

Huh, I was only at around 4/4.5k RPM 3rd shoudl have engaged just fine?
