Grinding noise from brakes, yet plenty of meat on pads still?

On the road....
I've noticed a grinding noise from my brakes recently, assumed my front pads were low (although no warning light) and decided to goto Krap Fit :o as its 2 minutes walk from my house, I could leave it there & let them sort it.

Got a phone call about an hour or so later to say the discs & pads are fine, all round, no signs of scoring, no noise from the brakes on test.

So I got the car back, took it on a fairly hard drive and sure enough, the noise under braking is certainly there, sounds like worn pads but apparently isn't, the brakes feel fine, and don't perform as if they were worn to the pads!

So whilst the noise is still there, fair play at least to Krap Fit, Brunswick Street Newcastle-under-Lyme - they could have easily conned me out of a set of pads at least had they been inclined to do so, I went in and asked them to swap them over, assuming a diagnosis was pointless.... :o

Any ideas as to whats making the noise though???

had similiar situation on my first car put it down topossible crusting on the top of the disc catching the top of the pads under breaking.
i attacked the top of the disc with a wire brush and coper grease on the back of the pads but could be something completly different.
Probally best to get the wheel off rotate the disc and look for signs of metal on metal wear.

Had a look today with the fitter whilst it was up on the ramps, I know what your saying, but everything looked & felt fine.

Hmmm could be wheel bearings. Any noticable wobble on any wheels? Credit to Krap Fit for not ripping you off aside, you are still probably better off having a good look yourself!

I have a ever so slight rumble from the n/s rear, its been there for a while & not got any worse, yet.

No play in it or any other wheels, the steering is fine, no shimmy etc....

I would have a look myself were it not for time, lack of workspace (live on a main road, no driveway) they are literally 2 mins walk away & I'm lazy! :o:p:D
