GSXR1000 K5/K6 - Frame Crack recall!

My brother has had a letter from Suzuki saying his K6 has been recalled due to weaknesses around the headstock/frame and needs to go in to be inspected for replacement or a preventative brace to be fitted.

Apparently affects all K5/K6 bikes, so if you havent received a letter maybe safest to contact your local suzuki dealer.

ouch, though not sure I'd want a preventative brace bolted and glued on, sounds abit of a bodge.

last time I heard of something like this is was Hayabsua subframes snapping off.. though that was REALLY scary, well for pillion at least :)
 
How could a cracked frame possibly be an acceptable fault for such a common bike??

My suspicion is its cautionary, and they have seen a few do it after excessive abuse (bad wheelies), and as a result are taking action. tbh i see these sorts of things as good things.

i take it its only affecting the 1000 as i have a K6 750?
 
Since our colonial cousins have a thing for wheelies and stoppies, me thinks the frame cant handle this abuse, not surprising really.

Hmm, lets glue a lump of alloy to the frame and hope the problem goes away. Personally i'd want the new frame option.

Wasn't the Busa recall to do with people using aftermarket cans, where as the stock Busa can was actually weight bearing and help keep the sub frame in place.
 
I remember that my dads 1098S got a recall letter for "Faulty Ignition Coil" or some such.

How could a cracked frame possibly be an acceptable fault for such a common bike??

What a very strange thing to say, do you honestly believe that Suzuki think it's acceptable? If so, why are they doing this re-call?
 
A mate of mine had a k6 a while back that snapped in half after landing a wheelie heavily because he is a idiot, he might not of been here today if it wasnt the loom holding the bike together while he stopped, that got replaced under warrenty when it was about 6 months old :O

Yup, and even then the only reported cases were where people had fitted aftermarket exhaust systems, end cans or exhaust hangers- the standard exhausts were load bearing, and effectively triangulated the subframe. But then idiots said "Why are these exhausts so incredibly heavy? Suzuki must be fools", and lo and behold their subframes broke.

Suzuki do have a wee bit of a rep for building bikes that can't stand up to what you could call non-standard use... One of hte TL1000s, can't remember which, had a frame cracking issue when wheelied, and the first version of the SV650 engine dry sumped itself and spun its big end if you wheelied too far, or even accelerated too hard (with race tuned bikes). Fair enough, they build the bikes for the job they're supposed to do but it's no surprise that people do rubbish wheelies on a GSXR1000 is it, they could be designed for doing terrible power-wheelies then panicking and slamming the front down again :D

Sorry but I don't have one bit of sympathy for idiots that do wheelies on their bikes anyhow, Suzy shouldn't have bothered with the recall, perhaps a few less idiotic bikers on the roads then

A gixxer thou will lift the front off the throttle in 2nd (later ones in 3rd), they have to have a design that can cope with people slamming them down again by accident. Wheelies are a fact of life on a bike like this...

It's quite a sweeping statement to say someone who rides there bike like it is designed is a 'idiot', I'd say if you ride a bike like this and the front never lifts then your on the wrong bike tbh.
