The GT86 auto is a standard auto with manual mode and "flappy paddles" on the back of the wheel. Also there is a Sport mode which leaves the gear change until much higher in the rev range. I believe if you floor it in sport mode the auto will rev to the red line before shifting. In addition is does automatic downshift throttle blips.

The auto box isn’t that bad other than the super long ratios. That’s what hurts it really, a change of final drive would make it much better.

From what I've read today a lot of people change it from the original 4.1 to 4.67. Of course I don't know what these numbers mean, but I can learn as I go. I've never considered modding a car before.

I think it's more that the auto ratios are normal and the manual is very short :D

Not sure what the side effects of changing it are. They must have done it for a reason.

I have the 2017, 1 year old. Yesterday on the way home from work I wound down the passenger window and the HOOOONNNNNNNKKKKK! it produced had pedestrians looking at me funny from the other side of the street.

I expect that will have to get addressed under warranty as down the window was a huge streak of something from something clearly rubbing on it within the door.

There is some foam inside the mechanism which falls off allows metal to come in to contact with the glass, which can scratch it. It happened to mine and was replaced under warranty.

So I knuckled down with the saving, and have been without a car since July, and I now have enough money for a GT86. :D
I'll be going to view some in the next week. I've decided to get one from a Toyota dealership if I can as I figure Toyota approved ones would be in the best condition.

I know about a few of the issues as they have been discussed in this thread and I'm going to list them, please let me know if I've missed any.

1. The chirping noise. I've listened to a few YouTube videos of this so think I can recognise that.
2. The window problem. Pretty easy to spot this one, even for someone not mechanically minded like me. Look for scratches.
3. The gearbox issue. Im going for an automatic so this won't apply to me. I don't think?
4. The rear view mirror problem. The mirror comes off the backing, not too much of a problem.
5. Rusty door pillars.

Anyone wanna add any other things to look out for?

Toyota dealer is probably the worst place to buy one, most dealers don't know what they are doing with the car and unfortunately forecourt cars are picked apart for parts. I've had a gearbox swap, satnav swap, battery swap and soon to be door card swap. A quick wash and they are posted for sale, they won't know the history of the vehicle bar what is stamped in the book.

My claim about the glass earlier in the thread? That warranty claim is still ongoing as they broke more parts trying to fix it, all on the dealer.

It's built completely different to all the other Toyotas and there aren't many of them around, so dealers are less experienced with them. Mine is going in for the 6 year service (which is a big one, engine needs to come out and most of the long-term jobs done) and I think it's the first one my local Toyota garage has ever had to do. It's that or take it miles and miles to a specialist :/

What miles has yours done? I was looking at 35k and under and do around 5k a year myself.

2 months in to ownership, from what I can say:

You will definitely recognise the chirping noise. Mine gets it when I run on 98 but ran it once on 95 where it didn't happen. Not noticeable 99% of the time unless you're outside the car standing near the bonnet whilst it's running for whatever reason.

Auto will miss the gearbox issues :)

I've got the rusty door pillars starting to show now however I think if you catch it early you'll be able to prevent it.

I went with Toyota Approved from Listers in Nuneaton, had no issues with that.

Unfortunately mine's been involved in a crash already though, small bump so got off very very lightly, other two drivers are in intensive care a week later. Non fault as someone went to overtake me on a blind resulting in head on crash. Waiting on insurance now which is going to be a sad one to see added when I come to renew seeing as though I'm 18, 19 at the time of renewal :(

100% a fantastic car to drive, I don't feel like it needs more power, may think differently down the line but it has a nice amount as it is.
