Hi guys

Need a gaming laptop for the night shift

Games - BF1, Sniper Elite 4, GTA5, Doom..... the usual AAA

I want to play at 1080p high or max settings.... price jump from 1050TI to 1060 isn't too high, plus ill get longer lifetime out of it

Any recommendations... been told avoid MSI

I can't find any Ailenware refurbs plus I think they are fugly..

Found an Asus FX502MV i7-6700HQ, 1060, £1150

or Asus ROG GL502VM i5-7300HQ, 1060, £1200

Do I need the ROG? it will be gaming for around 6 hours at a time

The i5 7300hq will cause a certain degree of bottle-necking with the 1060 in certain games. Games like BF1 could be affected. You would be better going for a i7 7700hq or 6700hq CPU with a 1060.

Also, the 3GB 1060 is going to be a limitation in some games like BF1 due to the lower amount of GDDR5 RAM and you should look at the 6GB 1060 laptops instead.

And yeah, stay away from MSI. Had my fingers burned 3 times from them. Never again!

Cheers I think I'm going to get this one it's £1200 posted and screen is also g sync 75hz. Plan on ditching the 1tb spinning rust drive for a 512gb ssd

ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM-GC010T
  • Intel Core i7-6700HQ Quad Core Processor
  • 17.3" Full HD Screen
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 128GB SSD + 1000GB 7200RPM HDD
  • Dedicated GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Graphics
  • USB3 | HDMI | Bluetooth | GSYNC
  • Backlit Keyboard
  • GL702VM-GC010T

The latest version has the i7-7700hq and 256gb m.2 But costs £400 more
Doesn't feel worth it

You may want to do a bit more reading up on this laptop and other Asus's before you consider them, it's a known fact that this 17" variant in particular is known to have temperature and throttle issues when stressed etc. (CPU running over 90c on average) I had one of these in the basket a few months ago when debating over a new gaming laptop but ultimately decided to opt for another brand altogether due to these reported issues.

As you've probably already seen slim gaming laptops are a tough choice at the moment due to the prices and also performance results. It may be way out of your budget but if you can, try and stretch to a Gigabyte Aero 15. Again with it being £1899 it's probably a lot to take into account, but these do game pretty well and handle the temperatures out of the box pretty good too.

I have the Asus ROG G752VM GC010T and the i7 6700hq max temps were 76c when playing Ghost Recon Wildlands for over an hour yesterday in the hot day we had. CPU never gets near 90c! The 6GB GTX1060 maxed out at 82c and there has been ZERO throttling.

Common sense needed. I have a laptop cooler cost £20 and don't game in bed or on my lap.

Is the Strix variant that much worse???

Now, my two MSI GT72(980m) GT72VR (1070) laptops had serious thermal issues so returned and refunded.

The G752VM and similar variants aren't exactly slim though as such and are designed for hardcore gamers such as yourselves, and also not great for portability. Hence why the vents on these laptops are large as they have much larger heat pipes & fans to tackle the heat dissipation better.

Sadly the Strix variants of these laptops (GL502, as well as the GL702) are all not highly regarded because of the temperature & throttling problems. The reason for this from what I've read is that the thermals are not designed the best and the GL702 especially has a third fan in place which actually traps the heat as opposed to removing the heat any quicker.

It may also be worth taking a look further on the NBR forums as a few owners have reported similar things.

Edit - I'd also stay clear of MSI as already mentioned on other threads, plus the IPS variants use shockingly low quality screens.

While I've had no experience with either laptops, I'd be more inclined to go for the Gigabyte if this model is the one you've narrowed down to. Though the Acer model you've quoted does look appealing but I'd do some more reading up on it first.

Hi Danny,

The P55W v6-CF1 is a great unit, and if you can find one for £1,300 ish we would suggest ordering it ASAP - there was only 1 left in UK distribution on Monday,,,,,

The replacement version with 7th Gen CPU is here at OCUK:

P55W V7 - two versions from £1,499inc - CLICK HERE

Hope that helps in some way.

Regards,

Thanks Im sure the P55W is a great 15" laptop, but I think at 17" will be much better for gaming, can't really find anything bad online about the ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM-GC010T
I guess I could get it, hammer it for a week on games, and if i am not happy send it back

I think I'm going for the Asus GL702. Seems the best spec for the price. I'd love a 1070 but can't really stretch that far.

The 702 suffers badly from throttling. The cooling system cannot cope with loads on both the CPU and GPU. I would look elsewhere tbh.....

Even with Asus's half arsed effort to fix the issue with a 3rd fan it still does not fix the problem.

This ^^^

As I also described on a previous post on here, the third fan is known to in fact trap the heat in place rather than helping to push it out... A bit of a flawed design if you ask me.

Ok so discounting the Asus then these are other options for less than £1300

Gigabyte SABRE PRO 15-CF2
MSI GE72VR 6RF(Apache Pro)-054UK
HP OMEN 17-w196na
HP OMEN 17-w110na

There's also other MSI variants and other Asus for under £1300.

I'm really torn. My last gaming laptop was an MSI gt72 dominator pro but now everyone on here is saying avoid MSI.
