Hello all, I have been doing a lot of reading about these 2 cards and from what I gather people say they perform best at high(1900+) resolutions. does this mean to say that the cards would underperform at a normal rez of say 1280 or 1600. I'm not trying to play a first person shooter on a crazy rez like 1900+ ? thanks in advance.

Theres not much point using such a powerful card on 1280, you will be getting literally 300fps on every game, the performance won't be bad, but the thing is the card will not be put to full use.

They don't exactly underperform at lower resolutions, its just that their full potential lies in their ability to still perform well at higher resolutions.

If you don't plan on gaming at 1900x1200 or higher, I'd actually suggest a 4850, or if you feel like a slight stretch, the 4870. It'll handle anything you through at it for anything below. Bottom line is it just wouldn't be worth the money to purchase one of the cards you've listed and not run higher resolutions.

Actually on second thoughts, don't get the 4870x2 no matter what because at low resolution Crossfire/SLI make things worse. I forgot about that.

Thanks for the feed back, I'm looking to play WoW and possibly new games in the future so I'm looking to get a solid card etc etc. I was reading a lot of people were having low FPS issues in wow with the GTX 280 and 4870X2 and wondered if it had to do with lower rez was all. thanks :)

it would be like driving a supercar at 30mph everywhere you went

really not worth it

unless you got the card and planned a monitor upgrade soon after

better still...

22" monitors are around £150 for a really good one [click the link to see]

i paid £250+ for mine so its a great bargain and would show off the capabilities of your new card

if you decided to go for a 4870 and a 22" screen you would end up paying £330

which is the same as what a gtx 280 or a 4870x2 would cost - plus at 1680X1050 resolution [what most 22" monitors run at] - a 4870 would be quite comfortable and you would end up with an all round better experience

thats just what i would do

if you are only playing WOW
a 4850 would be ok on a 22" monitor saving you even more money!
