GTX 480 Compare to the GTX 580 ?

It is a ~20% increase, and 580's can be found for £379. Even with both cards overlocked the 580 will still be ~20% faster, run cooler, use less power and have a £100 greater resale value. It is a no-brainer which card to purchase for anyone going the new route.

I just picked a used 480 for £240. Any more than that and I would have picked the 580.

edit: £300 plus is a lot for any sensible person to spend on one PC component. If common sense reigned, 2x GTX 460 or 2x 6850 would be the best option for GTX 580 beating performance.

When we talk of comparing performance are we talking about peak only figures? I ran a COP benchmark and compared it with the results of a 580 given in another thread and although the max FPS might be 15%, I noticed the minimum and average FPS were quite a bit better than that (30-40% in one case I think). It wasn't a like for like comparison though as the processors were different too so maybe that contributed.

Ideally someone with a 480 about to upgrade to a 580 should do loads of benchmarking - before and after the upgrade ensuring nothing else gets changed.

If I were buying a new graphics card now to upgrade from a previous generation (such as a 5870 or gtx 295) I would defo go for the 580. However for those who bought a 480 (and especiall recently), probably not worthwhile as the price gap will make it too much (yes I bought mine I think <2 months ago and if it's only worth £240 it isn't worth it), so sit it out for the next round and buy new again then. The 480 is still plenty fast enough I would say for at least another 12months

Insignificant increase in amount of functional hardware increases performance by similarly insignificant figure shocker? :p

It's in relation to the people going crazy over how it's "so fast and that a 480 will always be way behind it even at the same clockspeed". I've seen a few people go on about it like that today.

<pah didnt read thread properly post is bigging up vf3000>

I m only using it on a 5850 but i cant tell you how nice it is for your pc to make the same 'whoooooo' noise all the time, no matter what- some days no part in my machine exceeds 50c under load, with silent fans as in 60% apaches and noctuas, spec below.

Careful, not just 'i know what i m doing careful' but <ultra> careful on the install raven.

And your case will heat up like anything- that heat has to go somewhere.
