GTX 660TI review

Its all about the price

If the 660 is 250 then its a poor card...No reason to defend it.

With faster cards by NV for just 33 quid more then its a damp squib end of.

Regardless of how it performs against the 7950

erm, all I said was that it's faster than a 580... how is that biased?
it's quite funny that a site that is on nvidia's **** list and begs/borrows/steals cards to circumvent any NDA's gets accused of bias toward nvidia

they have heaven in their as well which is quite heavily leans toward AMD so it's pretty easy to see between them where it's going to come out

I didnt accuse you of bias.
Its clear they chose games and parameters which paint the card in a favourable light, trying to convince nvidia that they will get favourable reviews if they send them their top cards in future.

If you look at the games list, they are all Nvidia stalwarts, mafia 2, lost planet 2, lol even HAWK. And yes, heaven 3.0 does favour AMD cards, which is probably why they used version 2.5 which favours nvidia. They seem to use the very latest nvidia drivers yet old catalyst drivers.
I eagerly anticipate more balanced reviews from HardOCP, techpowerup and anandtech, and hopefully some BF3 and overclocked benches with the newest drivers on both sides.

^

TT always use those games, they have been using them a long time now, they really do need to realise that mid range last gen gpu's can play these titles comfortably now.

Releasing performance figures while sticking two fingers up at the same time isn't going to get you back in the good books with Nvidia, that's for sure.

HardOCP on the other hand, well they are more or less sponsored by Nvidia these days.;)

:)

So will Nvidia increase the price of the 670 to bring it back over 300 notes? If there's a £50+ price difference then people will think twice compared to £30. £50 is a bigger SSD or another 8gb of ram or a sealed CPU cooler instead of air and will make people think.

The way i see it:

GTX 670 = GTX 660ti or 448 equivalent?
GTX 680 = GTX 670
GTX 680 -> GTX 685?

Thats if they even bring a 685 out... since amd has yet to show more high end gpu to be released yet discarding the 7990 ofc.

EDIT: whats with all the hotlinking to ocuk's components site?! I don't want to do free advertising for you! Pay me if you want me to hotlink :p

On another note, it looks like the 7850 with its massive overclockability (is that a word?!) is going to completely continue to clean up the £150-£200 bracket.

Yes, its a strange one why nvidia aren't releasing anything to compete in this bracket

The 78xx cards still aren't great value for money unless you count the overclockability of the 7850 (which I do). Perhaps the 660 non ti will release at the same time, but I thought these were going to be gk106 parts.

On another note I think I will apply for an apple style patent on the word 'overclockability' before Rusty gets to like it :D

If I was in the market for a mid priced card and the 660TI is priced at ~£250 I would be heading for a 7850. Regardless of early reviews, I doubt very much that the 660 will be on par or slightly better than the 7950. Time will tell.

brought a smile to my face, makes my 7850 look terrific value. Nvidia have abandoned the mid-range to Amd, I dont get it, too many mid-high range cards, traditionally the money is in the mid range, very confused.

I'll be surprised if a 660 doesn't at least equal or perform a little better than a 7950 (pre-overclock), though as you say, time will tell. Regardless, I too would more than likely choose a 7850 for a mid-range card, even if the 660 was already on sale.

Well it seems Nvidia struck gold with these chips and they know it.

They are milking it for all it's worth, I blame the people who buy them, if they stopped handing over there cash like they do, Nvidia would be forced to drop the prices, as it stands it looks like people will swallow anything as long as it out performs something else, even if current games do not need the extra power and a sub £200 card would be enough, people still pay for stuff that is not even needed.

Two 680's isn't enough for BF3 maxed in Surround...

I agree with you to the extent of not needed but isn't this the way society is now? We buy lots of things we don't need from a snickers bar to a new TV.

I find the best way to look at it is from a usage point. I spend so much time as my wife allows sitting at my computer gaming or even just browsing. As I spend a fair amount of time at my computer, I can justify spending money on it (it is more like a hobby).

If I was a casual gamer/browser I wouldn't spend any where near as much as I do now.

If you can't justify prices, don't buy untill such time as you can.

1) I don't trust Tweaktown's reviews
2) I want to see how well it performs and overclocks from a reputable site
3) If Gibbo's $300 estimate for the card is to be believed then it better be on par with the 7970, otherwise the GTX670 is the better card and the 7850 overclocked is still good value for money.

Enough of these midrange cards, where is the real high end? GK110 baby? i'll stick with my cheapo 7970's until Nvidia release it's real high end..

After Kepler's success do Nvidia really need a true high end card anymore? Apparently an extra 1% performance over a HD 7970 justifys the extra £100 price tag... Anyone else remember when Nvidia had a proper lead and the the extra cost was justified? Those days seem to be gone now, 8800GTX was and still is Nvidia's best ever card lol.

I'm disappointed at the possible pricing, been holding off upgrading for a while now waiting to see how these were performing/priced. Looks like it'll end up being a 7850 :/

Actually AMD is just as much to blame for launching the 7970 at £450. Since Nvidia's GTX680 (or rebadged "original" GTX670Ti if you prefer to call it that) IS faster than the 7970, so there's no way Nvidia was gonna sell the GTX680 for cheaper. The only reason why the price gap is so big now it is only because AMD slashed prices to slightly more sensible level and Nvidia didn't slash price too much. But the thing is even the GTX670 is faster than the 7970 in BF3 and quite a few games. The original GTX670Ti (now the GTX680) was most likely aimmed at the price range of around £300 or less, but with AMD launching their 79xx cards at ridiculous prices of £350 and £450, Nvidia saw the opportunity of pushing their mid-high GTX670Ti to become a flagship GTX680, since it can beat the 7970 even if it's only by a nose length.
