GTX470, tell me I've bought the right card

I think you are going to need to wade through the benchmark reviews yourself. For me, tessalation performance on the 470 looks very strong. And as I'm playing Civ5 right now, and can attest to my 5850 struggling, you could see a real world benefit straight away depending on what games you play). But comments on noise on the reference design cooler have been mixed (some pleasantly surprised).

If I were buying a card today, I have to say I think that 470 offer would be it. I would be fully prepared to do the 7 day com thing if I couldnt live with the noise, though.

I'm hovering over the buy on 470GTX as well for that price but i really want the 6970 i would prob see no benefit from a 470gtx over my 4870x2 apart from phsyx and more noise (mines silent cooler).

I'm coming from a 512mb 4870, tried to find comparison benchmarks but no dice, it seems to be on a par with the 5850 so I'll have to dig up 4870 -> 5850 -> 470 benches.

You have done the right thing. Dont worry about what people say about the noise. Just download Afterburner and setup a custom fan profile. eg(50c=60% fan) This way the card never gets warm enough for the fan to go above 70%.

470 is one of the best cards on the market for price/performance.

The new mid range ATI cards havent changed the market much...

I don't agree. They use less power, run cooler and are much smaller dies. The prices can go down much lower if AMD wishes and that would force NV to drop their prices to match which would cause them significant pain.

From of the benchmarks and reviews of the 6870 I've read so far, the 470 beats it across the board. However the biggest problem is the heat, noise and power consumption of the 470, they're all fairly high (particularly power) as it uses the GF-100 chip.

On one review, they recommended the EVGA 460 F TW version which is heavily factory overclocked, but comes in close to the 6870 in terms of performance. Since the 460 uses the newer GF-104 Ferni chip, you don't have the heat, noise and power problems of the 470.

This is all moot if you don't care for those problems though, the 470 is a good performing card.

You made a good decision at that price. It's just faster than the new 6870, and if you overclock it, is near to GTX480 performance (looks like it may overclock more than the 6870, but obviously it's early days for the 6870). It won't be any louder or hotter than your 4870 I'd wager, and SLI gains (if you're interested) are nuts.

Yea but it doesnt really help if "AMD prices can go much lower if they want" when your buying something now lol

I would echo 99% of the other comments in this thread in that, at this point in time and for £175, it offers by far the best price/performance.

Yup, I would agree...the bit I'm not agreeing about is that the introduction of the 6870 doesn't change the market much. The lower prices for the 470 is the first indication of that, and with room to go down it WILL shake up the market...
