Hello all, I am considering treating myself to a New graphics card, I currently have a GTX 480 and was thinking about upgrading to a GTX580.
I was wondering what recommendation members have?
I have read that some 580`s are actually quite noisy ?
Thanks for the idea`s

I'd wait till Kepler, you will see a bigger boost than a 580..the 480 still should play games quite well. Any reason for upgrading?

re:

Any reason for upgrading?

Yes the Game Battlefield 3 gets released in October so I would like to be able to play the game on the very highest settings etc, I would also use less power and the card will be cooler etc.
But mainly for the BF3 if I was to be honest:)
Also at the moment I can get a fairly good price second hand on the 480 but once the 600`s get released there will not be much chance of that, so at the moment the upgrade will not be so harsh on the pocket!
Cheers

re:

There's no point to upgrade from a 480 to a 580. Go get another 480 for SLI.

Another 480  I would need to get another power supply as the one I have is 750 wats.

I would also have a problem with twice the heat:confused:

Thanks for the idea but I don't really want to go down that road.

Thanks

What are the rest of your system specs. The frostbite engine has been known to be quite CPU intensive so you may see more gains upgrading your CPU. Ignore this if you're running a i7/sandy setup.

Anything upto 55% on the fan i cant hear with the other system fans going, whilst gaming its set to 75% and as i wear a headset that doesnt bother me.

Hi there, whats the sound levels like on the card?

Thanks
mrix

EVGA coolers aren't very good unless you get the DS versions. The reason I like EVGA so much is because of their epic warranty ;)

My 580 SC is too loud for my ears, but is fine for most people. Can't speak from first hand experience for the DS version of the card but it is supposed to be quieter and very good at cooling.

As said, wait for Kepler. 480 -> 580 = waste of money.

The Gigabyte windforce cooler 580 I had before was really quiet and the MSI twon frozr coolers are supposed to be good too.

Finally, brand desn't really matter with cooler when talking about reference design coolers ;)

re:

Hi again, I was just looking at this card...

Gainward GeForce GTX 580 Phantom

Its appears to have a lot of ram at 3072MB does this amount of ram really help ?

Cheers

MSI 580 GTX twin frozr another one to consider. I've found the fan profile to be very quiet and not aggressive at all, so have in fact created a more aggresive fan profile in Afterburner to allow a bit more OCing headroom (still not too bad noise wise).

Gigabyte 580 with the triple cooler nice. Though the one I originally bought would not run stable at stock volts (a lot of that about these days!) and returned it.

ASUS DirectCU also nice. I originally dismissed this one myself as it would not fit in my case. Ironic, as it would now (removed the top half of the HD cage).

KFA2 Anarchy 580 also another to look at.

Tend to agree. Just depends if the OP wants to do it and has money burning a hole in his pocket. Common sense quite often does not come into buying shiny new bits for your PC (I'm as guilty as anyone here!). :):):)

he's already said he doesn't want to go 480 sli, seems to be adament on gretting a 580 regardless of everyone advicing that its not worth upgrading to 580 and to wait. not much you can do with people like this.

I went from 480 - 580 (RMA replacement :D) and the 580 is a lot cooler and quieter.

However, if OP has money, then another 480 and liquid cooling would easily get my vote!
