guess the damage.....

I had a similar issue, on mine it was the fuel cutoff was malfunctioning, which happens when you have an accident, so the engine wasn't getting fuel.

Good outside shout. But I've not heard of them being intermittent. Its definitely soemthing ignition so fuel/spark/air/sensor. Possibly compression but again not sure how that could be intermittent.

i'll bear it mind. Says it was one of the first things he checked as he had a vectra do similar the other week. Disturbed the wires for the plugs and injectors and it fired up so hes at a loss. Been ok all tonight though....

I am aware of that. But when its something that could likely be a sensor it would make sense wouldn't it?

ECU/MIL liight doesn't have to show for codes to be stored or for the ECU to pick up on something.

Why spend weeks guessing when it could be £20 to get the codes read which could well give you the answer? Its part of diagosing and a fairly simple step so why not?

Added to the fact nothing happened while driving, turned off wouldn't turn back on.

Or you could pick up an ELM327 OBD II diagnostics reader off ebay which connects via USB and is great to use with a laptop, they also come with the fault code diagnostics all on one CD. Loads of them on there going for under £20. I'm thinking of getting one fairly soon.
