Guitar Newbie Needs Help

Lo All,

Have been learning the guitar since well.. about June.

I've managed to learn all the chords on the dvd but one. The F moveable Dominant chord. I've been using the Keith Wyatt free dvd that comes with the outfit i got. I have a Squier Standard Strat by Fender.

Heres the shape :

1 - - - -
1 - - - -
- 2 - - -
1 - - - -
- - 3 - -
1 - - - -

Hope i've done that right. No matter what i do i can't get the 4th string to ring out. I managed to do it a tiny little bit if i dropped my first finger down to the tip of the 6th string but then i have to put so much pressure on it.

I bought a new signature edition powerball to strengthing my hand/wrist etc and its made everything better but it's going to take quite a long time to build up the strength needed for this i think. Anyone got any tips for this chord?

I still need to run through some of the pratice tracks on the dvd and previous chords and make sure i can do the progressions right making smooth chord to chord movements.

Once i've done that i'll need to do some easy songs but i can't find any good chord/tab websites. I found a couple but they were just clogged up with ads, pop-ups and god knows what else. (not ultimateguitar)

Hope you can recommend me some stuff.

Greatly Appreciated. Thanks

Aaron

.. as above, can be a little hard to barre at the first fret because of the natural lay of the strings through the nut but persevere young padawan! Make sure you just use the tips of 2nd and 3rd fingers too :)

Finger strength isn't completely important with fretting chords correctly on guitar.

To fret most chords you don't actually need to apply much pressure, if you start pressing down too hard you'll make the strings go sharp, and the chord will sound out of tune.

Try only playing the notes of the chord on the E, A, D and the string that's giving you the trouble, the G.

One thing though, it's especially hard learning any Barre chords this low down the neck. Try and move the whole shape up to the 5th or 7th fret, there you'll be playing A7 or B7 respectively. The frets will be closer together so you'll have to stretch less, and the strings will have less tension here so it'll be easier to fret them.

Try and lower your thumb to around half way down the back of the neck, by doing this you'll be able to straighten your index finger more, this should help you barre the stings more sufficiently, and ultimately allow you position your wrist further forward than before, so you have greater reach and precision with your other fretting fingers.

This is much easier to describe/show in person btw lol.

Thanks for replying all.

I guess i was just thinking this chord may of been used more than i thought in most songs using the first fret. I'll try it further down the neck. I'm thinking of buying the full dvd it's got quite a lot of stuff on it but i need to master the free dvd first.

Also is there a good site for learning to understand where you are on the neck? The dvd i have only tells you about it but doesn't explain in full detail.

How long do you guys/gals practice a day?

Also.. if i was going to buy another guitar when i finish with this would a Yamaha RGX A2 be any good?

Sorry there's a lot of "Also(s)"

I have been playing for about 6 years, and I hope you find some comfort in me saying anything to do with F makes me cringe. Hitting it perfectly is extremely hard when its at the first fret, but persevere and you will get better :)

Might be the guitar? I can imagine it being quite hard to play on acoustic but generally electric much easier. Maybe action is too high, or you need thinner strings? I tend to play every F chord like so now:

0
1
0
3
3
X

Just because I'm a lazy ****.
If you can bar easier further up the neck you could still play the chord in F:

8
10
8
10
8
X

Or even:

12
12
13
12
14
12

!!!

The Strings on my guitar i think are pretty cheapo.. It's a Squier Standard Strat by Fender. I got the outfit for £200 with a Frontman 15G.

I've heard these guitars sound bad and the 15G is ment to be bad also but i only got it cos i was a beginner and didn't really know what to look for and the guy in the shop recommended this one.

I'm thinking of upgrading but i don't know if my budget will allow. I don't even know if i'll have a budget come March 07 i need to save my money and buying a new guitar would probably set me back too much.

I was thinking of buying a Yamaha RGX A2 with Marshall Rock Box Kit i think thats what it's called. I watched a guy using one on Youtube and if i can do what he does with that guitar then i would be pretty happy.

I would have had another £120 last night but the guy who came to buy my PS2 etc... asked me to show it all working and stuff and then he said "i'll just go get the money" and he went out to his car got in and sped off down the road.

That would have been a real bonus and i might of been able to afford it. I just don't know what to do now. I'm still keeping at it though practicing for about 20 mins a day but this F chord is a right bugga. I managed to get it to ring out a little bit yesterday but that's all.
