Guitar effects software?

I'm looking for some software (preferably free) that I can use to create effects for my guitar which I've now plugged into my PC. After the usual distortion, delay, overdrive etc. Total noob to this so any sort of help is greatly appreciated, but please go easy on me!

I also have the feeling this was asked a while ago, but I can't find the thread!

Just an adaptor straight into the souncard.

I think latency is going to be just way too large seeing as it's just onboard sound

Try using the mic port, that's what I had to do :\
