Had AGP, XT800 PE, now 7800GS, Will X1950 Pro be better?

Hi Im still on AGP. ATI XT800PE 256mb died, got an Nvidia 7800GS 256mb as a replacement, would one of these ATI X1950 Pro 512mbbe better than my Nvidia for gaming? 1600 x 1200

I dont really have issues with the Nvidia, but I did prefer the old ATi for outputting to my plasma at 1360 x 768, but thats not so important..

Would the newer ATI be better?

Thanks Mark.

Depending on the rest of your system I think you'd see quite a healthy performance boost. An X1950 Pro is considerably faster than a 7800GS (assuming we're talking a non gainward glh 7800gs)

You dont give info on the rest of your system, but if its 939 then why not just get a PCIE motherboard? they are so cheap right now (30 - 40 pounds) and then you can have a much nicer selection of GPU's.

I build a computer for a friend and we found out that the x1950 pro 512mb is not faster, but has good shader processing.
If you compare your old 7800GS to a x1950 pro, you will gain on the shader aspect, like how looks, details and quality.
But on geometry there is not a big difference.
You should wait to the 8 series for mainstream public, and also the new R600 series, which will have high end to mainstream cards.

I think you may have missed the point mate. He's looking for an AGP upgrade. Although having said that with the low price of pcie mobo's it might well be worth changing it.

Whats the rest of your system Mark?

MarkW.... I think it's time for you to take the leap to PCIe. at the upgrade cost vs performance increase sticking with AGP is not worth it. Otherwise don't bother at all and save some cash for 3-6 months and see how the land lies on component pricing. I bet you'll see some stuff drop quite quickly.

Ive just gone from a Gainward GLH 7800GS 512MB AGP to a Saphire x1950pro 256MB PCIe and the difference in quality is amazing the X1950pro is much much better. I only wanted a cheap card to tide me over til the ATI R600 comes out and this is a better card for less money! My gaming is also a lot faster and smoother but that is probably down to the fact Ive gone from a 3.4GHZ Northwood to a Core2Duo 6600 :D

I think you are right!.
But it may have filled a short term gap if it is better.
