Had an expensive slip yesterday

I was doing the photography at a wedding with the wife on Saturday (wife in charge of course). It started to rain so I went inside, grabbed the umbrellas and made my way back to the bride, groom and the wife.

On my way out of the building I sped up and turned and did the following:

Slipped on the wet and slimey stone slabs and twisted my knee
Tore a hole in the knee of my £300 suit
Used my Canon 50mm F1.4 to break the fall of my Canon 5d

Result: pain, hole in trousers, bent cuff link, no 5D chassis damage, 50mm does not focus properly and the filter on the 50mm has damage.

Just happy it was not the 24 - 105 F4 L :)

Anyway - could the 50mm be repaired?

OOooo, feel sorry for you!

Good news is that canon will access your lens for free, they even post it back to you for no expense should you choose not to go ahead with the repair.

I had a problem with a faulty 17-40f4 that wouldn't focus, but the repair was close to the cost of buying a new one so I asked for it to be returned, it was promptly returned with no charge at all. Great service!

Ouch, thats annoying (and painful by the sounds of it!) Im thinking it could have been a lot worse though!!

Send the lens off to canon, they will give you an estimate and then you can choose if you want to repair it or not (provided it can be repaired). I can confirm as already said, it is free to do this.

When I first read it I thought it was the 50mm 1.8, I was going to say, if you are going to break a lens, thats about the best one to break.........but no its a bit worse :(

Update on the 50mm repair:

Called Canon, they logged a call on their system. They then emailed me two authorised Canon repair centres. The lens was sent to one of them.

Got the quote back for the parts, labour and return postage of £128 inc VAT - we are going ahead for the repair and it should be back soonish.

They did not offer to collect it though but it didn't cost much to send it.

Edit: After visiting the doctors last week he said I had quite bad bruising and fluid on the knee - this has more or less all gone now.:) (Hopefully I won't get any repercussions later on).

But he did say that both of my knees had worn cartilage and I have to take it easy on them when excercising :(
