Had an interview today!!

I would be grateful if you could give me a rundown of some of the modules you did and what branching off choices you had in your latter years.

Went to Arran this year on a trip, t'was brilliant, every other word was Dyke or clevage! :D Scenery was amazing and i learnt a lot.

The Alps sounded amazing!

ahh trust me these guys are different... the guy was explaining that while other companies (eg shell, bp, whatever) you will not be in the job very long term...

But he said in his 20 years he's only had to let go about 5 people, 3 of which in the 80s duing a VERY bad slump...

They are a "3rd party" company which do Core analysis (I'll explain more if I get it in a coupla weeks...) so not a big faceless corporation. The chap said he's looking to hire for long term purposes unlike the big guys...

Hey dude! They are out in the Kirkhill industrial estate at Dyce so the commute for me might be around an hour (living down near Stonehaven) but that's ok, I've done worse before hehe!

Did you get your puter and net set up yet? I've still got u added on msn!!

Good on you mate but I couldn't help grinning at the fact he was particularly pleased with your past work at ASDA, lol. Unless I'm jumping the gun and you wern't the typical student checkout boy! :D

Yeah Im on most evenings now, drove up at the weekend.


Your right next to the airport thats going to be a mare to get to in the morning.

We are apparently moving to west hill or somewhere similiar soon as we are growing too quickly, i have to fight people off my chair in the morning hehe.

lol i should probably explain that bit some more...

He said he was impressed with the amount of actual hands on work experience that I've had... I have worked as a labourer (he started chatting about his first job labouring) and in my gap year I worked in admin at an office before moving into the IT department while in my first year at uni.. now I'm a porter (trolley boy) at ASDA part time (it's great!! we do nowt lol!) and he was genuinely very happy to see a recent graduate with so much solid experience come along!

Hope that explains it a bit more hehe...

Here's a rundown of my Uni career (most modules are self-explanatory:

1st Year: Started doing BSc Computer Science with Geology as 2nd Modules (you do both up to 2nd year)...

2nd Year: After field trip to Madrid for a weeks mapping I decide that Geology is awesome so switch degree without losing any years... the first 2 years of geology were basic 1 module things, lectures every day just basic topics covered....

3rd Year: Serious stuff now with module choices as follows (each lasts one semester) :

Analytical Methods in Geoscience
This was boring, we went through things like rock analysis methods (XRF, XRD, SEM, yadda yadda..)

Data Analysis & Numerical Methods in Geoscience
Even more boring, basically statistics and stuff like that (i only went to one lecture as I did stats in 1st Year lol...)

Earth Internal Processes
Ahh good old hard rocks again...everything to do with Igneous rocks and the crust/mantle/etc...

Environmental Geoscience
Argh another gay module... all about Remote sensing and environmental stuff from water sampling to polluted grounds - this is a whole degree option so we had to do this to introduce us incase we wanted to do BSc Enviro geo..

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Geosciences
This course covers GIS using ArcGIS software

Composition of the Solid Earth
Igneous rock composition and minerals including fractionation/magma mixing,etc...

Sedimentary Environments and Depositional Frameworks
First full module on sedimentary environments e.g. Basins/river systems/sub-marine systems. sedminetary facies and sequence stratigraphy

Field Mapping and Map Interpretation
Our Mapping module including mapping project done on the Fife coast and a series of labs where we interpret geological maps and produce cross-sections /etc
 
now for 4th year:

Geodynamics
Covers Metamorphics and crustal dynamics. Metamorphic rocks and tectonics

Honours Field Excursion
Our trip to the alps!!!

Map Interpretation and Remote Sensing
More labs for map interpretation and seismic/remote sensing interpretation

Research Review and Presentations
Essay review - we picked a current argument in Geology each and summed up both arguments with a presentation...

Tectonics and Structural Geology
Folding and faulting woohoo! from Mylonites to Tongue folds and Salt tectonics - lots of cool things here :)

Petroleum Exploration and Geophysics
Kinda obvious... petroleum geology with a week long course on Carbonate geology

Physical Processes in Geosciences
Kinda like Geology Physics - we covered Fluid flow calculations, heat flow calculations and everything like that...

Research Dissertation
DissertatioN! :o

Did you find the first year easy with the lectures? As many people who I have talked to who did A2 geology said it
was alll the stuff they covered in their collage.

Thanks for helping me build up and idea of what geology would be like at Uni, i may still have some more Qs later. ;)

I think this might be unique to Scottish universities and even St. Andrews but basically you do 2 subjects upto 2nd year level so you can easily switch (in first year you have a 3rd subject aswell to make up the credits - i did stats and ancient roman history :) )

First year was ok actually! At St A you had something every day though... in 1st year I had Geol at 9am and Comp Sci at 10am! Then some labs and stuff on 2 or 3 days....

2nd year I had Comp Sci at 9am and Geo at 10am lol! ouch!!

Only in 3rd year did it change a bit to random times for lectures.... feel free to ask about any modules/subjects in detail and I'll see what I remember hehe!

There was a couple of people who had done either Higher Geology or A level and said that first year was basically the same, but ppl who hadn't done previous Geology had to be brought to the same level so thats why!
 
How many UCAS points (or scottish equivalent?) did you need to get into the course?

+ Science A level required aswell?

I'm not too sure... I'll look it up on the St. Andrews website....

Here's what I have though:

Higher English B
Higher Maths B
Higher Information Systems A
Higher Chemistry C
Higher PE A
Higher Computing C

Advanced Higher PE B

and got in no problems to (originally) Computer Science but had no problems taking the Geology modules!

Maths and either Chemistry or Physics would help a lot with a Geology degree!!
 
ok for Computer Science (according to the St Andrews Prospectus) you need:

SQA Highers: ABBB
GCE A-Levels: BBB

Geoscience has the same requirements but neither states specific subjects hehe...



*LOL I've just realised I'm in the latest Prospectus lmao!!! on the 2nd Geoscience page heheeh
 
ok on the 2nd page there's a picture with a caption "Honours students mapping in North West Scotland" or something like that...

I'm at the back right, with my class! didn't know that was gonna be in ... hehe
