Half Life 2 Ravenholm...

Ravenholm was an absolutely awesome level - one of the most memorable I can think of.

I can't believe HL2 was released over 3 years ago!!! I remember going out to buy a copy on release day, like it was last year!

It's nothing compared to The Cradle.

what makes it so scary? i've always wondered why people mention thief 3.

i crapped myself when i first met the running zombies and it launched itself at me i was like a headless chicken with a shotgun :D and those fast head crabs made my skin crawl...just like a massive spider. ergh.. doom 3 i never finished either. i hate being made to jump so much. i almost had a heart failure.

It's set in a haunted, ruined lunatic asylum. Most of the time, you can't see anything. Being Thief, you can't stand toe-to-toe with the mobs without getting mullered so you are constantly on edge, trying to sneak about the shadows, except the shadows are where the bad-guys jump out from. The plot for the level is about ghosts. The mobs are full-on chain-rattling nutters.

It's all there :)

/ed And as Huddy said, it's not scary; more very, very creepy. A thoroughly unpleasant feeling about the place. I've never felt like that in a game before or since.

Agreed, Ravenholme is just plain dodgy.

I got annoyed when I saw the priest guy and he ran off everytime as I knew he was the key to get out of the place and I wanted to do just that.

The way they build it up though before you get there is great.. Alex and Vince saying "We dont go ther" - The underground tunnels to get to it, you really do think "What the hell is ahead".

I also got lost in the place as well unable to find the exit which was more annoying.

VERY much looking forward to playing that level and indeed HL2 on 5.1 speakers.

I tried it with a pistol - very, very, very bad move :D

The worst thing about Ravenholm was....that night the guttering was shaking in the wind and it sounded like a zombie was coming up :(

Played it loads since - best level on HL2, but too short, and not enough of Father Grigori!

does thief 3 have good enough graphics to play today and not get annoyed by blocky models etc? like system shock 2...people claim its spooky, yet i am yet to be spooked by lack of realism (i.e the monster models dont look too good) :/ lol although i havent got to the deck that is the creepiest.

Thief 3 is only a couple of years old so the graphics are still good.

not if you use that you wont.

Yeah those skinless fast zombie things are nasty, I panic when they run for me, normally involves emptying a full mag from the rifle in a random spray hoping to hit it :p They did need something to help eleviate the monotony of the slow zombies though, as they are that slow and dull you can crowbar them to death.

But the skinless zombies are definetly up there with the zombies that carry the poisonous headcrabs that reduce your health to 1 hp :)

I liked Ravenholm, but it doesn't have quite the replayability of other parts of the game.

I have to say, though, I didn't get 'creeped out' by the level at all. I don't seem to get creeped out by games or films at all really. I'm not saying this to sound like some hardcase keyboard warrior or anything :p to be honest I feel like I'm missing out on some aspect of the game or film, but I don't know, I just can't seem to involve myself in the media strongly enough.

That said, I remember when I was a kid and I played original half life. For some reason the big stompy creature you have to face at the railway tracks scared the crap out of me. I didn't want to have to go anywhere near it. I think it's the fact that you can't kill it with your regular weapons. With ravenholm at least you know that you can just blast whatever comes at you until it dies.

Does anyone know where I can get some save game points for HL2?

I was quite happily playing through it, and then had to re-format and I really don't want to have to go from the very start again.
