We regularly play multiplayer splitscreen Halo 3 ODST in our house for a bit of fun/to vent some anger, but yesterday I discovered the delights of online play.

Now, is it possible to have splitscreen multiplayer but also play against other people online? And will the other user accounts on the xbox have to have a Gold subscription too?

I've noticed some people playing online with the same username but one of them has [1] after it - is that a way of getting around playing locally but without Gold subscription?

Sorry if this doesn't make sense!

Aslong as you're main account is a gold account you can sign in 3 other guests and take them into Halo 3 MP with you, only on unranked playlists mind you.

But for Fire fight in ODST I think the maximum is 1 guest, otherwise I don't think the Xbox would cope with rendering the same thing 4x aswell as controlling all the AI aswell. Or it could be because Firefight is built off the Co-op portion of the campaign which also only allows 2 players maximum to play split screen.

It's mostly graphical limitations rather than AI etc. The FF mode has a lot more objects to render compared to regular multiplayer.
