It's Grimm up Norf
It’s been a long time since I bought a new TV. As far as the technology is concerned, at the moment, I am none the wiser between LCD, LED or Plasma variations. Nor have I any idea what the differences between these are in terms of viewing quality/distance. If anyone could shed some light on the subject I’d appreciate it.

Now I’ve had a browse around the net with my budget of £800 although that figure is somewhat flexible provided quality and bargain matches, it could be stretched to £1k. I’m looking for at least a 42” screen though as I’ve already mentioned I’m at a loss technology wise at the moment so I’m not exactly certain which format or size suits HD 1080p the best. I’m interested in models that have loads of features and can hook up to a PC easily. Here is a selection of the models I’ve been looking at.

In the LCD range I’ve been looking at the TOSHIBA 42XV635DB and the SAMSUNG LE46B652T4WXXU
which are more or less in the same price bracket and under my initial budget.

In the LED range I’ve been looking at the SAMSUNG UE40B6000WWXXU which is right on the upper
edge of my budget and the SHARP LC40LE700E again on the upper edge but offers £100 cash back from Sharp.

Finally I’ve been looking at these two models in the Plasma range PANASONIC TX-P42G10B and the
PANASONIC TX-P42V10B however is there really a justification for the £200 price difference?

Any help deciphering these technologies would be extremely welcomed. I’ve been to a few stores to have a look at these models and they all performed reasonably well with HD material however the stores were unable to let me view them working with Freeview or SD, therefore I wasn’t able to judge accordingly, I began to suspect this a bit of a ploy tbh.

Which of the LCD, LED or Plasma formats would you TV guru type folks recommend and why?

Thanks in advance.

Ive yet to find an LCD panel that I have found enjoyable for movies, they are ok for watching the news, or gaming, but they just dont do anything for me movie wise. LED TV's are actually LCD panels with an LED backlight, and for now at least its still a single backlight, not 1 LED per pixel.

Plasma is lovely, im not sure the V10 series is that much better than the G10, slightly better connectivity I believe, but its exactly the same PDP panel, and picture quality between them is almost identical.

Im planning on upgrading my 42inch Plasma to a 50inch, and most likely it will be the Panny 50G10 :)

Every LCD I checkout still seems to suffer from lousy motion blur, even some of the new LCD/LED units that are coming to market at big money. To me, the plasmas walk all over the LCDs on movies. If it were my dosh, it would be on a good Panny plasma.

I've just bought a Samsung PS50B530 1080P 100Hz Plasma for a shade over £600, and can't praise it enough.

Absolutely stunning TV, 1080P PQ is excellent, SD better than I could have hoped for, and to top it off, a really good looking minimalist TV, with a superb glass stand, unlike the cheapo plastic you normally get, at this price range.

Not that I'll ever use them, but another sign of quality, it has touch sensitive controls on the front of the set.

Get them before they're gone, Samsung aren't making any more!

Thanks for the replies folks there’s definitely some useful information in these opinions. Looks like Plasma is a winner by quite a margin.
