Hamster Advice.

A mate had a hamster, was quite active playing out Spiderman across the cage etc, but was the friendliest hamster around. Wouldn't mind being picked up by anyone that came round (and that was a lot of different people), had never bitten anyone in her life either.

I remember our first and only hamster, it was given to us my a friend of my Dad. Bad tempered, flea infested, stuck it's rear against the bars and peed out of the cage.

The hamster wasn't much better behaved either.

We've got two chinese dwarf hamsters. Gave them a couple of days to settle in and then started introducing our hands to the cage. Let them sniff, offer treats etc. and basically show them that you're not there to hurt them. Then we started taking them out, handling them, letting them run around on us etc.

We've had them about 7 months and they're right characters now. One is a little passive and not so keen on being taken out of the cage but loves the attention when you do, although she nips a bit if she's cranky.

The other is utterly bonkers, "popcorns" for attention and gets in a huff when we put her back, even if she's been out for hours. If there's any noise in the room during the day, she will appear to keep "checking" if it's time to come out, she just loves having room to run around. She doesn't really bite us at all; she'll pull at our clothes but we just get licked if she detects something semi-tasty on our skin.

The moral of it is, be gentle with them, offer them treats and get them to trust you. Then the biting should stop.
