Hand sanitizers... Pointless or Not?

Couldn't care less about my own safety generally, barring the obvious washing hands after the toilet and so forth, but if it involves other people I generally be a lot more careful. For instance, if I'm cooking a meal for myself I often barely bother to clean the knives I use, but if I'm making a meal for other people I'll go the whole hog and wash every surface and my hands before even starting.

PS> The most pathetic advert i've seen however, is the one where they say how many germs are on a soap pump dispenser... Well... You push it, but then soap comes out which you wash your hands with! So what does it matter how dirty the handle is? As your washing your hands after!!!?
I made this argument when we put automatic taps in our last work. What's the point of how clean the tap handles are? You're about to wash your hands!

Well I spent a month using them recently, but then only after using a pit toilet* as there was no running water. Any other time? Nope....;)

*Hole in the ground with a bit of wood with a hole in, just don't look down...:p

Only time I'd contemplate (well do definately) washing my hands after handling money is when I'm in an African (or similar) country as that is about the biggest spreader of that nice bacteria that gives you the runs...

True about after handling money in African/Middle eastern countries where your body isnt used to the bacteria, and people store money in their pants :(

I'm afraid to say I'm really bad when it comes to washing my hands after I've been to the toilet...:o But then again I've never been struck down because of it so... On the other hand I am very clean when dealing with others food (wash hands before etc as you say).

As for the taps, you do turn them off right? So yeah, you touch the handle after you clean your hands.:D

It's completely pointless unless it kills 100%.

99.9% is no better than 0% due to the extremely rapid multiplication rate of microorganisms.

That depends on how often you clean your hands doesn't it ?
If you kill 99.9% every half hour, they're cleaner than laving them dirty for 10 hours isn't it ?

Speaking as a man i feel really sorry for any other man that seriously thinks and worrys about things like this. "i handled some coins, i touched a public toilet seat, I exchanged 2 pints of pints of bodily fluids anally with the South Camberwell basketball team."

What kind of parents raise a child to be like this?

hopefully parents who are not members of the south camberwell basketball team

depends if the 0.1 that survives is harmful land normally kept in check by the other 99.9 %, otherwise you end up with 100% of the very harmful stuff no longer controlled by the harmless :p

I am the sort of person who is constantly washing their hands when out so I tried this, perhaps stupidly because I didn't research the product beforehand. Straight away my skin had a bad reaction (it peeled off and gave a burning sensation).

I will be staying with soap and water.

I'm the kind of person who wash my hands straight away when I get home :p I use a piece of paper to turn off the tap at public places and use my foot to open the doors too! I'm not extremely bothered though unless I'm going to eat something. Just might as well if I have the opportunity.

Don't see much use of the gel thing but the wet wipes are quite useful. Usually have some with me when travelling.

i would never buy some and carry it around with me in the 80s and 90's all we had werew soap and water and tbh people get ill more often now days with all this omfg it must be clean crusade everyone is on.....

sure if im out and my hands actually feel grubby i will wash them but hand sanatisers seem pointless if you have poo on your hand and you use a sanatiser it might kill 99.9% of germs but probably doesnt they arent allowed to say 100% for a reason....

the poo will still be on your hand because you havent actually washed anything away...

regaridng taps in public toilets most toilets are fitting with those taps where you just press the top down and water comes out for XXX seconds?

doubt my grandad has ever used one, he is still alive.

So yeah, he done all my research for me. No need, stupid idea.

That's not the point though. Hand sanitizer is best to be used after you've done some dirtywork and cannot get to a sink etc.

I keep one in my car boot, I use it when I've checked my car's tyre pressures at the petrol pump as an alternative cleaner to remove brake dust off my fingers which would otherwise get lodged into my leather steering wheel.

I also use it randomly just because the smell is fresh and is relaxing.

Lately though I've been using it after exiting an Urban Exploration site!

i keep some in my work bag, when you have to have your diner in your truck there is no were to wash your hands so i use some wet wipes then that stuff.
