Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

That sounds quite good for a 640Gb laptop drive, actually in the current market it'd be good for a 640GB desktop drive even.

Anyone with a Seagate Green having any luck with getting 3 years warranty as opposed to the two that Seagate claimed that it is covered for in an earlier post?

2xWD greens failed on me....Scorch marks on PCB...WD wanted pics I gave them

Got RMA's got rid.....The only WD I trust are Blacks

well this is a blue, if that makes any difference? ive had plenty of WD drives in my pc's and they have all been fine, it could have just been you were unlucky, or a power surge or your psu did something naughty, or as i say bad luck.

Laptop= SSD

END OF

M4 OR ocz FOR 50-60 Are your mad?

I use a hard drive in mine, I did use a 120GB SSD for a while, but I got sick of messing about with an external drive so in the end I switched back to a hard drive, purely for space reasons of course.

I use an SSD in my desktop for the OS and apps though, I'm 100% an SSD fan ...but in the case of my laptop it's just much more convenient to use a hard drive. Even though I absolutely stand by the argument that the SSD was almost made for portable computing for many reasons ...I still need more space often enough to not use one myself. Although I would always recommend one for most people who don't require the space that I do.

I've RMA'd 3 WD's that I've had to replace for customers, I really doubt I will get a replacement this side of christmas, but does anyone know what turnaround they have to commit to?

My suppliers warned me of the prices at the beginning of last week, with panic buying the prices went up 10% in 1 day and has continued to rise.

This will affect all consoles as well that take HDD's, sky boxes, virgin boxes etc... bleak times, I've tried to explain it to my customers but because it really hasnt hit the headlines no-one cares. I've now printed a picture of the flooded WD factory and stuck it on the counter for them to see,

You will not get a three years warranty from Seagate..

.

...as I have noted Seagate have confirmed it three times in writing (the last one being from Mr. James
Global Technical Support / Oklahoma City) and their warranty checker shows it to be two years and not three. Part of his response contains...

....Warranty is only depending on the reseller. As you can see, by the snap shots provided, Overclockers is selling OEM drives with a 3 year warranty. The warranty process though would not be through us, but rather through the OEM or overclockers, as they are selling these drives and we do not warranty any OEM drive....
I'm not sure if that means because it is an OEM drive that is sold here at OC it will not be covered at all by Seagate, but that is what has been sent to me.

The above screenshot was taken from a large (competitor) website showing the warranty status of Seagate drives, which only confirms what I have written.

What I have done is taken a screenshot of the webpage and also saved it showing their advert at the time of purchase. As my contract is with the retailer and not the manufacturer I shall see what that would mean if I was to need it.

WD are up front with their warranty...

Seagate do not seem to have such a page.

This might cause some issues for the retailer as they are still advertising the drive with a three years warranty, unless they themselves honour it of course.

BTW - Even if you think that you are ok with a HD in warranty have a look here and see if yours has any of these marks etc...

...if you do you are stuffed. Easyrider managed to get his WD drives replaced or refunded with a burned PCB not sure how they would have been dealt with by Seagate after seeing those pics.!

Its a tough one for suppliers, yes it has a 2/3yr warranty but thats with the manufacturer so if a supplier has to replace a drive outside 12 months its going to be at their cost due to the lack of drives, however due to wear/tear on the drive the supplier could stipulate that drive has lasted outside the 12 warranty and as the prices were so low this is a reasonable amount of time for a £35 part to last, therefore it will need to be replaced by the manu's.

You have a point but... WD sold their Green drive every bit as cheaply as did Seagate and the other manufacturers and...

One of my WD Green 2TB drives was acting up, or so I thought. WD's support was impeccable with their help and assistance. They guided me through their diagnostics and helped me with the values which were returned by the software. They offered me an advanced replacement drive, just pop the old one in the box and a courier will collect. They took my serial number of the drive and told me that it appeared to be a "grey import" or something like that but not to worry as they will adjust things at their end to ensure I get the warranty I'm entitled to.
I told them that as the drive was only a couple of weeks old I will pop to my retailer and see what they say first, they left the case open, as such.
My retailer exchanged the drive for a new one.
WD themselves rang me the following day to ask how I went on.! I told them all was well and they wished me all the best and not to hesitate to ring them again.

The above, for me, was a superb response from a company who were selling a 2TB HD for just over £50, with a three years warranty.

Nothing wrong with that.

If the drive was only advertised as having two years then fair enough, but it isn't - unless the retailer take the warranty as their responsibility, as Seagate will not do that.

Damn was hoping to pick up a couple of 2TB drives as well :(

Be patient.
In another 3-4 months, they will be back down in price.

I can't help feel that there is a lot of unnecessary hysteria being generated. Certainly, this will hit businesses hard as in most cases, they have no alternative but to fork out the extra cash. However, personal users do have options (namely, buy later and make do with what they have for 3-4 months).

I agree with this. Not many consumers will spend this kind of money on a hard drive. Most will wait it out and those who have to get a drive will only buy one and will probably shop around to do so. There are many places charging significantly less than £130, and most people will carry out their business with them.

I also think the whole story of component shortages is over blown. Nidec who make most of the world's hard drive motors is apparently ramping up production in other factories they own. I personally think most of these price rises is caused by histeria and suppliers sitting on their stock.

Thanks. It's quite unfair that the warranty information hasn't been passed on to retailers. It's not as if Seagate don't look at retailer product pages. Luckily initial Seatools tests indicate none of my drives are DOA. If anything should go wrong withing years 2 and 3, I will take it up with the retailer.

Don't even need a 1tb external HDD, but just ahd to jump on a deal I just saw for a 1tb WD Elements SE usb 3.0 for 59 quid. That's all my storage sorted for now so don't have to worry about this price increase any more!
