Been reading and asking for advice for a few weeks now and have my short list as such made up, and just need some old heads to look over and guide me in the right direction.

I have £1k in the bank but does't mean I have to spend it all for the sake of it, saving some cash is also a option

Starting off is the 08 Rockhopper range, all the way from the Disc > Comp Disc > Pro Disc, is the money for each model worth the extra £, it seems that the comp disc is well worth the extra £100 ( and should be getting 10% on any bike I do purcahse from the LBS ) but is the extra again for the pro disc just diminished return?

Then to throw in the mix is the old favourites Rock Lobster/Merlin range, which is a couple hours drive away but not written out yet.

I'm also half wondering if I might get a extra special deal if I buy myself and the Mrs a Rockhopper each from somewhere.

Any views would be great.

I would be on the look-out for some amazing second-hand bargains if I were you. Plenty of people will have spent the winter building up bikes only to realise that they now want something completely different and need to free up the money invested in order to do so.

How tall are you and what sort of riding are you intending on doing? I might have spotted something earlier that would suit...

Gonna go with a suggestion here, how about a Cube? Not very big over here yet but getting here. Some good deals for the spec of the bikes, strong, very nice frames (I own the acid disc). Lovely to ride, very fast at climbing and i can hammer it down the decents like my downhill bike!

For £528.99 you can have the cube acid disc, comes with xt mech, lx front mech, shimano hydro brakes. ritchey finishing kit. Not the best forks in the world but work and i have also given them some abuse (4ft drops etc) and they have held up.

Or if your feeling a bit more flush, how about the LTD Team. Same frame as the acid disc, but with slightly better spec on the forks, wheels etc!

I had a specliazed fsr xc before my cube. It was good however i didnt find it interesting. However the cube has resotred my faith in XC riding! Very nice bikes and WELL worth the money. A better spec than most companys out there in which your paying more for the "brand"

I give you a rather lovely Dialled Bikes Price Albert:

Medium PA in grey - excellent condition
Hope headset
Syncros 70mm stem
Easton EA50 low rise bars
Lizard skins loc ons
Coil 426 U-Turn Pikes
LX HT2 chainset
XTR calipers with LX levers and Goodridge braided hoses

LX mechs and shifters
Syncros seatpost and speed v seat
WTB Speed Disc rims with Pro 2 hubs and Nevegal 2.3 tyres.
SRAM 950 cassette and chain

Frame, cranks, headset are 6 months with the wheels, cassette and mechs being new and unridden and the rest somewhere in between.

I think he's wanting around £800 for it but you should be able to knock him down to £700 with some ease.

EDIT: doesn't want to sell now. Typical!

I nearly pulled the trigger on a Marin Rocky Ridge hardtail this year on the cycle to work scheme. Decent 140mm Fox forks, should be a superb hardtail for Llandegla. Also getting great reviews all round.

To be completely honest, I have a rockhopper and IMO not a great bike for rocks and jumps in Llandegla and Cody, it's more of an XC machine with a more race / stretched out focused geometry, mine is relegated mostly to easy trails and country lanes.

The orange crush is also highly rated but I've never ridden one, would be my second choice for an All Mountain mountain bike (and also on the penny on your budget).
