Will one fan be enough cooling? :S
Why four display ports?
Eh, I count 5 for starters, it will likely have a dongle for display port to dvi, or potentially a dvi to 2xdvi option. You can also daisy chain 6 displayport monitors from a single output so it has all it needs frankly.
no mate,
i have 2 8pins and 2 6pins...
i'm just surprise it's 2 8pins..
i was thinking it was 8pin + 6pin.
Again, why the 6970 can use a decent wedge more power than a 5870. Overclocked to max levels a 6990 should also use noticeably more power than a 5970, which really should have come, and almost all oc'd versions and custom cooled versions, with a2x8 pin connectors.
@Garee , but ccc doesn't show how many SP it has... if it has more it will be faster then 2 6970, even if it slightly under clocked.
The architecture has 1536 shaders, it does NOT have more shaders fused off, the 5870 did not have more than 1600 and the 4870 did NOT have more than 800.
Okay, to be fair, theres an INCREDIBLY slim chance it has more, but the other cores did not have more cores, I haven't seen a die shot of Cayman yet, its possible yields were different and AMD drastically changed their plans, but its highly highly unlikely.
The only top end single gpu that came out without all the shaders enabled was the gf100, with very public yield/production problems, not a single such rumour has surfaced(outside of Fudzillatard) and no indication of such. Basically the 6990 is 2x1536 shader cards, at reduced clocks, but will it be slower, maybe not.
Why, in a heck of a lot of benchmarks 2x6950's get stupid close or right on top of 2x6970's, largely because theres so much gpu power there that cpu limits start to come into play in the vast majority of even quite overclocked systems.
If theres a bottleneck on 2x6970's then losing a little speed might not even be noticeable.
Either way, remember that AMD launched the 5970 basically telling you really not even slightly subtley that this HAD to be a sub 300W card, but they made sure it can cool up to 400W and unlocked overclocking limits higher than usual, etc, etc, great rated memory, blah blah blah. They told you in no uncertain terms, we had to release this under 300W but you'd be dumb to not overclock it to the speed it can easily run at.
Expect EXACTLY the same from the 6990, downclocked to stay within 300W but have reviewers encourage overclocking results and talk up the cooling capacity.
It will also be significantly cheaper than 2x6970's, though obviously has its downsides aswell as positives, cooling will suck, suck balls, personally I wouldn't buy anything but a 3rd party triple slot cooling real fan using version.
