has anyone bought a New TV recently?

All edge lit LCDs these days are trash due to the rubbish backlight uniformity caused by making them so thin, only direct lit LCD is any good.

If I had the money I would be getting an OLED.

You can't tar them all with the same brush. Some are poor others are very good. FALD is better but again it comes at a premium you may as well get OLED when paying the premium associated with FALD.

It's not about the money for most it's value for money. I could buy a £600 phone for instance but I know in 6 months time another will be out that is better. It will only sell for £300-£400 then and IMO it isn't worth losing £300 to have the best every 6 months.

The same goes for tv's. Buy what you can comfortably afford that does the job you want it to do and buy every 3-6 years to get your monies worth out of them.

The last 3 tv's I have bought for instance have all been decreasing in price.

£900 to £449 to £349. 1 of those sets was also top of the range in a clearance sale, the other a reference level plasma and the cheapest a 4k Hisense to tide me over for a while until 4k sets mature.

Having owned 3 quality plasmas (2 top of the range panasonics and a top of the range samsung), I don't think modern LCD's are as bad as some make-out. In fact, I've seen some LCD's that have blown me away.

I went for Panasonic because I classed Hisense as a cheap and nasty brand, I read the reviews for the Panasonic before purchasing it and they only said that it experienced a little clouding on dark scenes, other reviews seemed to confirm this but my set has poor uniformity, I've had an engineer out who took pics and he himself said it wasn't very good but Panasonic rejected the claim and that was that.

So whats the point in paying for a Brand name when Hisense is just as good (or bad)?

Companies feel like they're penny pinching with TVs these days.

Name the retailer you bought from?

All tv's have issues, the more you spend even on hisense the better a tv you usually get however there are some cheap bargains out there too. Panasonic are not as good as they once were (during the plasma years), if you wanted a brand name you should have went with samsung IMO.

I got the Panasonic from the SSE Shop.

you were concerned about the brand of the tv you were buying but not the brand and quality of the shop?

should have gone with a reputable retailer like john lewis they are superb when it comes to issues like this, they would have offered you and equivalent spec tv if the replacements were unsuitable. they also would not have fobbed you off.

I never approached the retailer regarding the issue, they fulfilled their part of the contract, my gripe is with Panasonic for sub standard products, and no, it wasn't a Vestel Panasonic.

To a lot of people the defect is probably acceptable, but I'm fussy but without the budget available to buy £700 TV sets.

this is an interesting topic for me.

Yesterday I broke my trusted 2008 Panasonic Plasma and having done some reading for a day, I was close to buying the following:LG OLED55B6V - for £2299.

But seeing the AVforum threads, reporting some issues (as you say, not all bad user experiences, bit hit & miss) stuttering, banding, colour issues, it is all too familiar with the situation we had / have with high end monitors....so I paused and bought a gap filler:

Panasonic TX-40CS520B 40 inch for £300.

I think I need to see some things mature...certainly I had my heart set on OLED and coming from Panny plasma, it seemed a natural progression, but when I am spending so much I don't want gambles, I want nailed on satisfaction.

So the gap filler for now...lets see what develops over the Autumn

I'm pretty sure this is mainly problems with the 65" version, if you have a proper read through the 55 one seems better, and having received mine today I am happy with it (so far!).

well did not buy a TV over the bank holiday weekend
sort of gutted oh well it was always going to be dependent on funds

I just sent back my Sony 65X85 for a refund as a software update made watching 3D impossible.

So my next one will be either a OLED or a KD75X9405CBU which would be better for HDR.

Picked a KD75X9405CBU it's coming next week :)

costco had a few yesterday

LG ones but I know for sure I want 50-55inches max

60 -65 was too big (that's what she said lol)

Also just read about some LG 4k TV's using RGBW pixels which effectly cuts 4k resolution by 25%, why are manufacturers constantly trying to screw over the consumer?

We're at an awkward time with TVs as we're on the cusp of mainstream OLED sets.

I would much prefer having a 1080p OLED over a 4K/HDR LCD screen, but as I want both for a decent price I'm waiting a year or two before I upgrade.

Yeah it does seem that everything is going 4k though, they probably won't make 1080p OLED anymore.
