Has the day come to say goodbye to my e39 540i?

Those are the hoses that have gone. Special order from Germany too!

Omg I can't imagine for Tim life of me what an e39 looks like

I really like the idea of a 540. Almost convinced my mate te get one, so I don't have to

Do we not get this sort of thread from him on a semi-regular basis? I'm sure we've had a 'waaaaaaaaaa I want to get a Smart car' thread before.

How do you know it'll fail emissions? My old omega had an intermittent lambda fault code, rattly cats and an mot tester convinced from the exhaust smell it will definately fail emissions for years and it always sailed through. See if it fails then worry about replacing cats.

Please keep it. If people keep chopping in their good cars for these **** ones, the government will start thinking people listen to what it says. :p ;)

Yes you do.

I like Smart Cars, I think they are practical for me. I work from home, & have no commute.

I am possibly keeping the 540, and just doing work on it as and when. All is does is short trips into town.

It will fail it's MOT as it is running on one cat only. It smells like an old escort on leaded fuel!

Can we have a pic of said car please

Yes it is in rather good nick, but the sea air is taking it's toll slowly!

Is it the sea air thats taking its toll, or neglect?

Not too sure how I can prevent it getting coated in salt water, without moving. We are very close to the sea, and the parts facing the sea are starting to have rust appear.

Unless you live right on the front and the waves come over then presumably it's just the salt in the atmosphere? It's probably more likely to be the usual E39 rust-spots that simply have not been rectified when they appear and therefore continue to get worse. I live in a seaside town, too.

'Coated in Salt water' does sound rather dramatic. It conjurs up images of your car parked on the Sea Wall at Dawlish!

As you said I am Dramatic ;-)

The rust is appearing only very slightly, it is on the list of things to fix.

Where is it, out of interest?

I take it you mean the rust?

Rear arches near the bottom, underside of the sills. It is all surface discolouration at the moment.

A bubble has appeared under the boot lid right in the center.
