Has the day come to say goodbye to my e39 540i?

As an owner of an aged very, very, very high mile e39 who's just dropped £500 on it getting its brakes sorted for the last MOT - I'd say keep it!

Mine also has a slight bubble starting on a lower rear arch & a bubbling bootlid lower edge.

Swap it for a Smart car? - I'd rather walk!:p

Get her fixed man!

Pffft fail post is fail.

You didn't mention how your gearbox has lasted so many miles and that you were bashing your face against wood, I mean touching wood.

:p :p :p :p

For the bootlock section, remove interior trim, pull bootlock out, thorough clean the inside rim area, smear waxoyl around the area, refit bootlock.

The gearbox has lasted because I've not touched it I think!

I swapped the transmission fluid on my e38 @125k miles and it very quickly stopped wanting to change into 5th in auto mode (was fine manually though!)

I'm currently wondering what to do with it, it needs tyres soon plus the mentioned bodywork , the bill for both combined will easily run into 3figures, (I'd just spent £500 on its last service & MOT) on a car thats worth 1k at best.... On the other hand, its still pretty good overall, it never missed a beat on a recent trip to the South West, bar lower mileage, I doubt I'd notice much improvement if I was to go & swap it for another e39 that was on a forecourt for ~ £3k

:)

Any particular known preventative tricks for the bootlid for someone not suffering yet?

As pepsilol says, take the boot handle off, clean up the area and wax it. Be careful not to overtighten screws when you put it back together.

I did this with my M3 a couple of years ago, it's very easy to do.

Thanks for the info guys. Will add it to the list. So, hedgehog, rocker cover gasket, vanos seals and alignment done this week. Now the fun begins - heated seats retrofit :)

The e39 is staying for the time being - it will be going through a pretty comprehensive fix up.

New cats
New brakes all round inc hoses etc.
New radiator
New bushes up front.

Now I have something to buzz about it, I can get the BM fixed over time.

The Smart is actually a hoot to drive!

So you do 2000 miles a year and figured what you really needed was a Smart Car as a second car?!

Yup, I need something to get around town in. The smart is easier to park in Brighton, uses less fuel, and costs £6 more per month to insure using multicar insurance.

I put £15 in it the other day, and have done a fair few miles with loads left. £15 in the BM will get me about 40 miles in town!

Plus I like them, as you have said I always whaaa on about getting one. Job done now.

If those 2000 miles are spent nipping in to town and parking in congested streets is it really such a bad option?

EDIT - too slow with my reply :p
