Has your opinion of Windows 8 changed over time?

I've always liked it, went in with an open mind, and have been using it for a while now on my second pc and a laptop, love the speed of the startup, and its simpler for my gf to use because she just switches on the laptop, hits the ie app and away she go's, same for email.

When i use it i just use the desktop, have my common apps pinned to the taskbar, and for the rest just remember the start menu that used to be at the bottom left corner is now a start screen at the bottom left corner, and instead of hovering over the little double arrows to expand the menu, just right click on the background and select all apps, i'm tottally used to it now and quite happy using either win7 or 8, but prefer 8 because of the out of the box benefits in terms of booting up times. So overall my opinion has changed from not really having one to rather liking it. Next job is to get my kinect working with it so i can sit infront of the telly and use it. I will be upgrading my main rig to it but not for any other reason than i need to buy the pro version of windows as i need more ram, i dont see it as a replacement for win7 but i do think its a good product and definetly a step in the right direction.

Pinning apps to the task bar is definitely the way to go for most people.

Win8 is not bad IMHO,I had to do quite of bit of work in getting all my shortcuts on taskbar or desktop and its more work then Win7 in that regards, not surprising since its more a tablet OS,however once I done all that and installed Start8 from stardock its seems ok.

I can now get use it,however not convinced I shall install it on my desktop gaming PC which has Win7,but probably will upgrade to 8 on my laptop(15 quid is not much).

If your gaming PC is just a platform for games then Windows 7 will be more than adequate.

I don't see the point of something like Start8 if you already have your apps pinned but if it works for you then that's great.

I never hated it during all the various releases but at the same time it's just not fit for desktop, for me anyway.

My main pc is a HTPC sitting under the TV, I'm using a Dinovo Edge for keyboard/mouse which is fiddly enough at best with W7 - W8 just wasn't comfortable to use.

I would use W8 but only if I could disable metro and have a start menu.

Therese a few apps like start8 that will do this for you I really recommend trying them. Drastically improves Windows 8. Although tbh why bother just stick with Windows 7, far better for this sort of thing.

And I can only imagine how hard it is to control windows 8 when
your sitting at a large distance away i.e. a tv. Definitely not what Metro is best suited for

Metro is big, you have large click areas, exactly what you need on a hTPc. All hTPc software uses big buttons for this reason.

The MS RC6 compatible remotes 'largely' work to navigate the Modern UI Start Screen for HTPC use. There's some anomalies such as it would be good if the Green Button could be customised to act as a 'Win' key, but at present it still launches WMC (if present).

Also use the cursor keys and enter to navigate and select Apps from the Start Screen. The diNovo's are not the best for mouse control in any OS - so it's not a Win8 issue.
