Greetings fellow Nova-T-500 owners,

I'm just putting the finishing touches to a bad-boy HTPC and I seem to have come unstuck trying to get this Dual-Tuner working in MCE2005, wondering if any peeps can tell me what they did to get it working?

After the hardware was 'physically' installed I booted windows and got the [new hardware detected] popup, pointed it the Nova-T-500/WinXP CD and as far as I can tell it installed the drivers fine (everything looks good in device manager).

Fired up Media-Centre and went to the TV bit, it asked a few questions about the location of the PC etc and started scanning. After it had finished scanning I tried to watch one of the channels but I get a polite message saying something about a software decoder not being installed? (or it was malfunctioning).

After a bit of fiddling and head scratching I then went on to install the whole Win-TV application and that seemed to work fine but only within the 'Hauppauge ' program, when I try the same in the Media centre I get the same message as before . . . No software decoder?

What am I doing wrong lol? I will call Hauppauge monday morning to speak with one of their tech support but wondered if any of you guys knew what to do?

Have you installed a software decoder like nvidia dvd decoder or windvd decoder?? MCE needs a decoder of some kind to work. I had a similar message before with my PVR 150 I installed the nvidia decoder and it works fine now.

Hmmm no I don't think i did install a decoder? Thing is like I said it seems to work when I use the WinTV application.

Are you saying MCE2005 doesn't support digital Tv out the box?

You probably just installed the drivers, you need to install a decoder to view the image, descaler 5 is free and probably your best bet, but the hauppage wintv software comes with one, not sure how the software behaves with mce though.

Most people swear by the nvidia purevideo codec, I have it but prefer descaler.

 (just wanted a santa smiley)

Alright lads, yes you were both spot on, just got off the phone to Hauppauge Tech Support and thats what they said

"You need an MPEG2 decoder installed on the system". They recommended PowerDVD6.0, WinDVD6.0 or something called descaler (which was the free option!).

I asked him how come the Nova-t-500 works within the WinTV application and he said "WinTV doesn't use/need an MPEG2 decoder, but MCE2005 does"
