Am looking for an AV amp but only have about £250 to spend (Excluding Speakers).

Need the following features:

HDMI Inputs
SPDIF/COAX Audio inputs
S-VIdeo Input / Output
Composite Input / Output
Component Input / Output

Is it possible to downscale a Component Input so it can be viewed on SVideo/Composite untill I get an Hi-Def TV? I would have thought a Component signal downscaled to S-Video would look a lot better than a standard composite signal?

Im reluctant to buy an amp without HDMI as although I dont have Hi-Def yet, will have one sooner or later and the HDMI outputs on the newer VGA cards look great.

Thanks for any advice given and sorry if I sound like a noob :)

There are a good deal of amps in that range that have HDMI connections, but very few have good hdmi upconversion (converting other inputs to hdmi to allow one connection from amp to screen). There seems to be a few coming out shortly though that have upconversion added over their predecessors, and onkyo have a reasonably priced amp capable of hdmi upconversion.

Most amps can output a composite/s video 'monitor' signal from component/hdmi.

Heres some food for thought:

For £250 you can get yourself a brand new ONKYO TX-SR505E av amp it has all the features you mention as for the downscaling thing you would need to refer to the manual some amps allow downscaling some dont.

virtually all hdmi equipped amps will feature lossless pcm, the newer amps will also feature dolby true HD and lossless dts, but the players can always sent the signal as lossless pcm anyway, so its not much of a change in practice, as either way you get a lossless digital signal fed into the amp.
