Basically I am buying a house and having nothing but trouble with the solicitors.( Largest conveyancing firm in UK, but have been waiting 4 months !!!)
It seems they do not know what they are doing. Error after error after error. This month alone, they send me a letter saying please sign the mortgage deed (with no deed in the envelope) I phone to let them know, and they say they will send out another.
I then recieve a letter asking for me to return the deed I dont have !!!.
I phone again asking for it first and they say they will send it out as they forgot again. I still wait and phone once again, to be told that there is a lot of inexperienced people working for this firm who dont know the procedures !!!!
Now they send me a different official document with my details on the first 2 pages, but with someones elses personal details about there names, house, price, addresses etc. on the other 6 pages.
I thought all this information was meant to be personal, yet it worries me how they can make such a basic error and not check what they are sending.
I phoned them, yet again, and the boss came on the line flapping asking to send this document back ASAP.
Have I got something valuable here ? :D
God they are useless !!!!

Keep that document until they sort you out but it could be a possible blackmail...
Call the news of the world!

Seriously, find another solicitor.

Tbh the person dealing with your claim is probably someone who did A-level law and is being handed all the bog-standard stuff based on a Case Management program that tells them when to send chasing letters and suchlike.

You could complain to the Law Society I guess, but probably best just to co-operate and get it all out of the way as soon and as cheaply as possible.

Keep it as a bargaining tool till they pull their finger out over what you are actually asking them to do for you!

Do it!

My Solicitors were totally useless, and because of them we nearly didn't exchange in time before my term ended in rented accomodation.

It took soooo many calls in the end to get them to pull their fingers out.

Your Solicitor isn't Langleys is it? They were mine, and I strongly advise anybody to avoid them like the plague. :D

I dont really want to give out their name but I got my mortgage from a firm "Countrywide" Mortages, and they are very close to them. ;)

I say name and shame!

They won't know who you are (if they did, what could they do), and it might stop people from making the same mistake as you by using them.

Not always easy halfway through a purchase. But, I agree. Personally, I would never, ever, use a solicitor recommended by the Mortgage provider, let alone part of the same group. I want my lawyers independent, arms-length from all other parties, and more bothered about protecting my interests than worrying about their next referral. The number of times I've been pressured (unsucessfully) by either estate agents or mortgage companies to use other "services" they provide, or recommend, is astonishing.

Even better, take a copy and contact the person who's details are on it. Explaining how it happened and how you thought they should be aware their sensitive financial information was being mishandled by their solicitor. You can be confident of one thing, you will never get any joy trying to take legal action against a solicitor!

Having purchased a few homes I have been shocked at the total incompetence of the legal profession. Luckily I have finally found a solicitor that is very good. Expensive, but worth every penny (Gavin Bain in Aberdeen if anyone is interested).

Just call them up and ask to speak to some one competent.

It's amazing how quickly you can sort things out when you start interupting proper solicitors and actually get them to pull their finger out or go and shout at some one.

Just advise them that they have broken the law by breaching the data protection act. This is a MASSIVE thing for a firm of solicitors / lawyers to do. Just tell them that unless they assign a senior partner to deal with your case you will have no choice but to report them to the law society and the Information Commissioner.

I know which ones you mean! Due to their time wasting and lying, I nearly didn't manage to buy the house I live in now. The vendor was just about to sack us off, 'cos she was well sick of it. I had to take two weeks off work just to make constant phone calls to these jokers.

I'm sorry I can't really offer much advice other than keep ringing and ringing and ringing - only way to chase things through now. If you were a bit earlier in the process, then you could get someone else o the case.

Joe.

If it's a local office, go in and ask to speak to someone in charge. If they won't do it there and then, book an appointment for asap with the head honcho.

When you go in, take *everything* they've sent and make sure you get your meeting with them recorded in writing by one of their minute takers. Make sure you write down the details of all phone conversations - dates, times, people's names, what was said etc.

Explain the full situation, show them all the docs and then firmly - but politely - tell them get it sorted or else, and make sure you get a written timescale of what they'll do and when! You'll have it all in writing and the person in charge will go kick some backsides - and make sure you force them to keep to their timescale for sorting it all out.
