Have Nikon officially announced new cameras?

Supposedly this thing has surpassed all expectations according to people who got to shoot with it for a preview.

About 1 and 1/2 stops better high ISO and 100iso native.
AF is bang on in everyway and the "new" method of 3d tracking is supposedly insanely accurate.

10fps .. Glad they didn't go insane on the MP count.

Video mode is supposedly "the best in a DSLR yet "
1080p 24/30
720p 24/30/60

FF, 1.5x, 2.7x mode available with no video resolution loss ..

Just need to sell a kidney now :p

It seems some people are very confused and have NOT done their research. Nikon has two high end cameras - the D3S and the D3X. The D3S was an update of the original D3 and is a dedicated camera for low light photography. The D4 replaces the D3 and D3S. The D3X has not been replaced yet.

I think that's a little harsh. There's been no mention anywhere that a D4x will ever be created. Canon have combined their 'sports' and 'studio' into the 1Dx haven't they? Perhaps Nikon will do the same, and save on manufacturing costs of two separate bodies.

Have to admit I'm a little underwhelmed by the D4's announcement. If you're coming from a D3/D3s then it's very much an incremental improvement rather than a major advance. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be a fantastic camera, but not enough to tempt most enthusiasts away from their current equipment. Most of the improvements that have been made are in the video feature set. Personally, I could care less for video on a DSLR, and I'd have rather seen more R&D time put into advancing the still image quality ( dynamic range being my number one priority ). I think this camera is very much aimed at professional photojournalists. Nothing wrong with that : does make me wonder though what other cameras Nikon will announce to complete their refreshed lineup. I'm keen on a successor to the D700 and D3x.

Just under 500 notes for the 85mm with AFS does seem like a pretty good deal to me tbh,
although maybe, just maybe, it might hammer the price down a little on the 50mm afs which would be around the 85mm mark on a little crop body :D

The D4 looks pretty amazing.

2 aspects I particularly like are the backlit buttons (all of them) and the auto sensing AF point orientation so you don't have to reselect the AF point when switching between portrait and landscape.

Neat!

I imagine the price won't be so neat though. Need to save harder :p

Better low light performance than the D3s as well, now that's particularly appealing.

Looks like it's about one stop better low light performance than the D3s - very impressive, but is it really needed ? The AF detection at -2 EV will be very handy. That should translate to making life easier locking focus at f8 with a tele lens and converter.
I'm not sure on the new card slot : on one hand it futureproofs the D4, but it looks like the manufacturers are going to fleece us for the new technology. Back to the bad old days when compact flash cards cost £100+ for a few gigabytes.

I don’t know about that, back then flash storage was expensive and a new technology across the board. Today this is no longer the case and flash storage is getting cheaper and cheaper.

Ah, but Sony has announced their range of the new cards to be released in February ( to coincide with the D4 presumably ) - and they aren't cheap !

I'm finding the sigma more tempting atm. Maybe if this 85 get's into the 300's I'll bite once I can afford to.

I personally can't stand this guy and find it hard to bere listening to him, but he has a few interesting bit's of info.
Apparently the D4 ISO quality will be one stop better than the D3s, which isn't bad.
