Have you been to Russia?

Was in Moscow not last Christmas, but the year before. Moscovites are the most depressing, angry, boring, humourless people I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. Awful place.

I aint high.

I am not going to finland. I want to go somewhere where there are at least some people, a city or two.

Finland is great and there are cities there. If you don't want to go then that's fair enough but there's no need to make up reasons that simply aren't true.

I haven't personally been to Russia but I met quite a few Russians while I was in Finland and a number of friends have visited there - the general consensus was that it's a bit mad and you may well struggle outside the main cities if you don't speak Russian (you may struggle even in them) and it's liable to be a bit more dangerous than more Westernised places if you aren't careful.

I believe also that you've mentioned your sexuality a few times, Russia is not the most welcoming of countries for homosexuals as a general rule.

Finally could you please make sure you've fully starred out all swearing in previous posts as leaving letters in is against the rules.

Generally my tip is that if you happen to find these kind of people any where in the world, then the golden rule is that these people are to be avoided. Hanging around such people will only make your trip/journey a distasteful one aswell:(. Mind you I have seen plenty of such people in uk aswell and whenever I see such faces in the morning I just look the otherway.

On the other hand I like to observe smiling warm faces and take in all the positive energy lol:D.

Another vote for Helsinki. It's a wonderful place which I am setting my sites on to live.

I lived in St Petersburg for a year and I don't recommend you living there. Go for a 2 week holiday and see how you like it. I go there every 3 months or so and I really don't like staying there anymore.

I've been to the Ukraine. It's an utter dump.

Which part did you go to? It is still a poor country, we send parcels of old clothes, food etc to our family in Lviv.

Some of the villages are quite nice and community focused which I really enjoyed such as Zeleny Hai, we took a horse and carriage through the woods, sang traditional folk songs, very picturesque! These villages still had outdoor toilets and wells to draw water from :D

BTW, its 'Ukraine' not 'the Ukraine', sorry, one of my pet peeves!

Went to St Petersberg in 2002 one of the most amazing places i have visited but not all for the best reasons, an unforgettable experience however.

Helsinki was fantastic too

Anyone who has a bad time in ukraine or russia obviously doesnt know how to pull the 'Im a nice foreigner looking for a nice girl' play.

I like Scottish people but I have to say Russians are the warmest people I have met. The amount of meals and vodka they have shared with me is unbelievable. Moscovites may be depressed and pushy, but go to any capital in the world and try and find people who walk around with a smile on their face. I know a bunch of people who are from outside of moscow but study there and they know how to take advantage of living in a big city.

Ukraine is a poor country, but culturally it is very rich. Even in the centre of big cities amongst the foreign investors there is still plenty of culture. They dont have many of the luxuries we take for granted, so when they do get them it feels a bit more special.

My favourite example of that was when I was in peru for the 2006 world cup final, watching it in an italian resteraunt on a 21" crt TV but the room was packed and the beer was cheap - much better than waltching it on a big d projector down the local or whatever (for me personally). If you're not the type of person who enjoys the people side of life and venturing out of your comfort zone then stay away from the east and stick to holidays in costa del whatever.
