Have you heard this before from a dealer when buying?

When your with a car dealer/trader and after the verbal foreplay its time to discuss the price.

Of course your going to discuss the price, its to be expected. What I really don't like is when they use terms like "Well, if we drop the price, things might be left on service" or "We might not make too much of an effort to prep the car" or "I'll just charge you extra for service and make my money back that way"

Now, I had this when I bought a BMW E30 estate after my daughter was born but needs meant it had to be bought.

The same was said by the chap I went to see with the S4. He's pretty up to speed with VW/Audi and we need work doing with our Golf and getting alloys for my mothers A4. Also, when I find the S4 I want, I would take it to him for service etc. But after that comment it puts me off. The guy said it needed a new MAF but then suggested he wouldn't change it if the price came down and it would just cost me a lot more when it did go and he'd have to fix it.

I understand why they say this as a bargaining chip but I just don't like what it implies. Its like a threat IMO and I just won't buy the car if these things stat being said.

Sorry for semi-rant :)

Sounds a bit odd, like you said it's almost to be expected that you're going to want to haggle, but then to say that they'll do a half arsed job if they get less money is just stupid!

I'd try and take your money elsewhere, who's to say they won't bother anyway even if you give them full whack.

Any of those phrases would have me walking away to be honest. I'd hate to think what their attitude would be if it had to go back for warrenty work.

So would I.

Yeah, they have to make a living etc, but thats not the kind of thing I would expect a salesman to come out with when discussing a prospective sale with a customer, far from it.

Discussing price/haggling is an art. Some people are good at it, some are not.

I am usually pretty rubbish at it, but when buying my last car in September last year, I actually managed to say and do all the right things to counter the salesmans talk. It was the first time i had ever done the "OK, but if you change your mind, there is my offer of cash, give me a call, I'm off to look at another one and if its as good as the car you are selling and the price is right, I will be buying it".

Just got my hand on the door from the showroom and he shouted me back........ ;)

With an attitude like that they sound like cowboys, they wouldn’t get my money ever.

Can't argue with that. If they are treating you like a **** before they get your money, what will they be like after?
