hd 7970 in pciE gen 1 folding rig

Can't seem to find an answer anywhere on the web, i have a folding machine with an old lga775 board with pciE 1.0 x16 slot and now have an opportunity to get hold of a hd7970 for it. Does anyone know if hd7970 would fold on a pciE gen 1 slot or would it not be backward compatible?

I went ahead and bought it (too cheap not to have done), installed it, it didn't work, works fine on other pc with pcie 2.0 though so answered my own question
