I'm soon to be getting a HD TV and HD-DVD player and would like to have HD Surround Sound to go with it.

I've been doing a bit of reading and i understand I need something with a HDMI input. I've done some searching with google but i can't seem to find anything that's relevant, just packages that include players with HDMI input for DVD upscaling.

I'll openly admit that i'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to this sort of thing so i need some help from you guys. I'm not looking for anything serious, just a package that sounds reasonable and won't cost the earth. I've set a budget of around £200-£300, what's my best option?

I presume you're talking about AV Amps, if you can stretch to £400 then this little beauty will do you well.

Onkyo TX-SR605

NB: This doesn't include any speakers, but you'll need something like this to decode the HD audio from HDMI 1.3

That's nice but just a little too steep, especially if i have to buy speakers as well.

I was think along the lines of those all in one surround sound packages like the sort of thing you can get from Argos, does nothing like that exist for HD yet?

I doubt you can get HD Audio from stuff in Argos :p.

Correct me if i'm wrong but you need something to decode the HD Audio in the first place, the all in ones don't have this capability as far as I know.

Have you ever had a 5.1/7.1 surround sound setup before ? if not, you will be more then happy with simple dolby/DTS. For HD audio, you will need a £300-400 reciever, then at least £500 worth of speakers to even notice it.

I think most people would advise you steer clear of the all in one packages.

as far as I was aware no current HD DVD or Blu Ray players output undecoded HD Audio... so you don't actually need an amp that can decode it.... the decoding is done onboard the player

This is correct. HDMI outputs LPCM 5.1 which can be transferred to some AV amps, such as the Onky mentioned above. Alternatively you can use the analogue outputs of something such as the Toshiba HD-XE1 into any AV receiver with 5.1 inputs.
