Hey all

I've seen a few videos on YouTube which are in HD quality and it appears they use low depth of field on their videos which I personally like the effect of.

I've done a Google, but I can't find what type of cameras these are? I'm not sure if its the traditional HD video recorders or something more costly?

Quite a n00b when it comes to HD Video, so if anyone could put some input in that would be appreciated.

Thanks:cool:

You need a dSLR size sensor to get a decent shallow depth of field so I expect thats what they will be taken with. Cheapest would be a Canon 1100D at £350ish?

The majority of consumer HD Video cameras with fixed length, relatively standard zoom ranges that aren't necessarily fast are not going to be able to blow out the background easily.

A digital SLR with video function allows it because you stick on any lens you like.

Thanks.

So video recording with a dSLR I could use the auto focus (as a normal camera would do) and zoom back and forth and I could then switch to manual focus and select the point of interest to be in focus?

Would say a 1100D be better than a dedicated HD camcorder? Or is a hd camcorder better just few allow the flexibility of the lenses?

I've looked at some videos and they look a bit sluggish on YT with the 1000d is it me or it doesnt look like it 'flows' much?

Not all DSLRs have constant auto-focus.

Most of Canon's offerings for example, you have a button you can press that will attempt focus, but it won't track anything like when using it in normal camera mode.

People using them for their benefits for filmmaking will be focusing manually, there also exist a lot of aftermarket rigs which will allow smoother control over manual focus.

Ultimately it comes down to how and what you actually want to use a video camera for. If you are just shooting general stuff, or anything where you might need autofocus then a general video camera is the thing to go for.

If you are shooting with the intention of filmmaking, where autofocus is not a major necessity, you can either go for a semi-professional video camera, or a DSLR.

I've got no idea what video is like on the 1100D, so can't answer that.
