never done it before. is it difficult, how much would i be looking at for cheap second hand lappy sata hdd and OS, it will only be used to surf and right essays on.

another question guys, once the new os is installed the lappy hardware will work? or will i have to download individual updates for each bit of hardware ie optical drive, wireless internet thingy?........sorry for such noob qustions.

and yes the hdd is dead, popped it into my external drive and it has 40,000,000 errors.

cheers in advance.

easy enought job to install, usually a panel under the laptop and a few screws, remove and replace, you will need to download drivers if windows doesn't install them automatically.

If it's a well known laptop, post a link to the manufacturers web page listing specificaton. You can probably get the drivers from them too, although they might be years out of date.

If you mention make and model then some helpful soul can post direct links to the most recent drivers direct from the component supplier, e.g. Intel chipset driver, wireless utility, etc.

In a recent format I used laptop manufacturer links for audio and flash card read as it was easier than trying to find from dead companys. Then used most recent drivers from component manufacturers for the rest.

I would say you would be better getting a new harddisk the margin between say an Ebay second hand and online new can be very small. Given that you won't get a warranty and you don't know what abuse the drive has suffered under it's previous owner...

A new HD isn't a massive amount:
OCZ Vertex 30Gb

Ohh whoops...;) :D wrong one  I meant:
Fujitsu 160GB 5400RPM SATA 8MB Cache - OEM

Don't forget MS rolls up new drivers in their OS service packs...

hehe i see what you did there......honestly didnt know i could get an hdd for 35 quid, pretty chuffed now need pointers on getting a cheap os and not linux. thanks very much for guiding me on this...........

Why do you need a cheap OS? The laptop should have the key on the bottom from th eone that was installed on the now failed drive, all you actually should need is the installation media and that key.

a lot of laptops and pc's do not include recovery discs these days they are often built in now as a recovery console a hidden partition on the drive so unless the op backed up externally t ocd/dvd or external drive if his orignal drive is damaged he may not have any option but supplier and ask for cd etc.

And if that was the case it would have nagged about burning recovery discs, either way a cheap OS is not needed as it will have a valid licence key stuck to the laptop somewhere (unless it wasn't licenced in the first place) on the laptop and all that is needed is the correct media.

First port of call would be the laptop manufacturer, if no dice there you may be able to order replacement media from Microsoft for a small fee.
