Hi all,

I have a strange problem and was hoping that people here may have had similar, have a solution for it or at least an idea of where to look.

I recently bought a new MOBO, CPU and RAM so took the upgrade as a prime time to upgrade to Windows 7.

I have Windows 7 on a new drive, and my old vista drive also in the case so that I can copy the game saves etc over.

When copying my music over from the vista drive to Windows 7, the vista drive disappears from the system completely after a time.

I have copied the files over in explorer and also tried using SyncToy but the result is the same. After about 20GB's (out of 90) an error message is given that "You need permission to copy this file", but the drive has gone.

I have looked in the event log and there is no error messages or hint that something may have gone wrong, I have checked the power options and the HDD's are set to never turn off. My computer, device manager and disk manager all do not show the drive that goes. Doing a search for new hardware also does not show it.

After a reboot, the drive re appears, it does not drop off during normal use, it just seems to be when copying the files over for a long period of time (+-20 minutes). I have also copied other directories on other disks for over an hour without the problem occurring.

The only thing that crossed my mind was that the Vista drive was installed with IDE set in the BIOS, and I am now using AHCI, but I dont think that can cause the problem can it?

Tonight I will put the drive into an external case and try it that way but does anybody have any thoughts on what can be causing this?

Cheers!
Andy

Hardware involved is: MSI P55-GD65, i5, OCZ Ram and 2 Samsung F1 drives.
