I drive an N reg 1.1 punto (yeah... you can stop sniggering now :p ) anyway it has a basic radio cassette stereo in it, most of the time when I'm in the car I connnect my cheapo 512 meg MP3 player by a cassette adapter which works, however its not that good quality and quite fiddly, messing around with a mp3 player and batteries, now I have seen a nice headunit for £140 that plays cds and mp3 cds and you can connect an Ipod to (I intended to purchase an Ipod sometime, but not immediatly) would I be ok putting such a thing in my car with it lacking an alarm, I'm asking because someone else posted about ICE for a 90's car and someone mentioned security, do all head units these days come with removeable fronts, does that make them secure enough?

The car is parked on my driveway in a relativly quiet area or in the car park at my place of work on an indut. est. or (and this worries me most) when I start college in sept. it'll be spending weekdays in the rail station car park in the city centre (buses wouldn't get me their early enough to catch the right train)

Reckon I'd be safe?, or would it likely go walkabout in a car without an alarm?

(Oh, and when I do eventually upgrade my car, I'd be taking it out again  , so I don't see it as pointless because of the car's age, etc)

might be worth buying one of those flashing red LEDs from halfords for ~£10 - thatll do you

TBH i don't think a flashing LED is a deterrant anymore on cheap 90's car's. I don't even think alarms are much of a detterant anymore either :( Lost faith an all that. If you can stealth it, or at the very least when the facia is removed it will be hard to tell what radio is actually in the car, you should be OK.

Make sure you secure the cage of the stereo as best you can, and alway always take the face with you. You'd be surprised how many people either leave them attached to the stereo or just throw them in the glovebox.

The only other thing you can really do is not be a numpty and play your music at full wack as you're going into the car park/parking the car.

How about... leaving the standard head unit in place and putting the new CD player in the glovebox or something (depends how big the glovebox is though).

You can remove headunits from mark 1 puntos in about 30 seconds.

and thats with all the doors locked.

But if I took the front with me would anyone bother trying to remove it? or are their ways for them to get new fronts  what about all this security code stuff, does that stop people nicking them?

(its a sad day when you fear buying something nice just because you think it might be had away by cretins :( )

Security codes- every ***** and his dog has code generators etc now thanks to eGay. Not really going to put the committed thief off, may stop chancers. As for facias- you can get these- many crims take headunits without them or take a gamble and often find them in your glovebox...

always take facia with you!

leave glove box open - to show it's not in there

failing that - be prepared to loose the £140 head unit if some ***** scum breaks in

i think you can buy a sticker thats says "head unit removed from car when parked"

That's going to extreme lengths, surely?

It'd be a nightmare to use if it was in the glovebox...

yeah cant say I'd ever put a head in the glovebox cos I think it would destroy the ease of use. I love the standard fit one on my Xantia because controls for just about every function are on the steering wheel and I can just glance down to look at the screen.

No matter what you do, if they want it, they will have it.
Often dashboards are damaged when well secured cages are ripped from the dash.

Yep no point in securing the cage really well, they will just pull harder and rip the dash out in the process, this happened to my mate, trashed his dash getting the HU out. Then again he was a bit of a noob, drove through rough areas with the system blasting so every theif and his dog knew there was a good system in there. Keep it low key.
