I don't see why you wouldn't overclock either, especially given your engineering (techie) background and when you're posting on an "Overclockers.co.uk" forum!
I use the H50-1 because it has none of the weight issues associated with these larger coolers and still allows for a half decent overclock without being too noisy.

Like many others i cannot fathom why your buying a high end cooler for a cpu that you will run at stock also for a stock cpu your choice of mobo is also overkill but each to their own maybe you want it on the off chance your going to overclock in the future. I have only ever seen one report of heavy coolers doing damage and that was more down to the person concerned who had it installed with no support and went to a lanparty with the genius idea of doing some offroading on his way so not really the cooler or the mobo's fault there. If you don't plan to move your pc once it's installed then i cannot honestly see a problem with any of the heavy coolers although if you were to move the pc for any distance i would take it out beforehand.

Why do people think that heavy coolers will snap boards in two?
They get designed properly by quality companies such as Noctua. Even if the OP is running his system at stock, uprated cooling is good for lower temps and noise.
The intel reference heatsink can be noisy at times and doesn't exactly look pretty then again neither does the Noctua.
Personally for air cooling I'd opt for a Megahalem, or even Super Mega, oh wait that might be too heavy

The fact the OP wants to buy such an expensive mobo for no apparent reason would re-enforce this. IMO as far as e-peen goes it's rather pointless as anybody who has a clue would question why it wasn't overclocked...

OK ... so most of you are saying that both the motherboard and the Cooler are an overkill.
Let me explain some things :
1. I said that I will not be overclocking ...this does not mean that i will not overclock in the future.
2. Most of you said that the motherboard is an overkill...true. But it is a sort of luxury or present to myself which i wanted to do and that i could afford. Of course the asus PX56D -e would have worked out fine ....but the asus rampage III extreme is too beautiful and has a lot of potential + it fits within the budget
(I have a budget of 1200 Euros - for which i have worked pretty hard this year - so i want to enjoy them)
3. As an engineering student i brought up the subject of the heavy hit sinks because even and dumb person would realise that these coolers are getting heavier. Someone suggensted the corsair water cooling - well very simply said I do not want to go with watercooling.
4. As i said i might be overdoing it with the cooling and this is wh i have ruled out the noctua NH-14D .... however I want to "upgrade" a bit from the stock cooling, it fits my budget.

Do you think the processor and stock cooler is designed to run a system @ idle or? . . . Why are you throwing your money £££ away on something you don't need at all? . . . having said that I just noticed what motherboard you are using!

I don't understand why you are buying this specialist high-end kit designed for World-Class benchmarkers and simply running the system at stock? . . .

I will answer you by making use of a case. Why do people by Alpha Romeos ?
They are good cars , but depreciate like hell, are costly to maintain and for the same money one could opr for "better" or more reliable cars.
The reason why people buy alpha romeos is because :
i. They are beautiful
ii. The people who can buy them can afford them
These two choices may seem stupid... but it is what it is

If you are happy with the knowledge that you could have got similar performance for a lot cheaper and have the money to spare then go for it. It's nice to treat ourselves once in a while.

I got the Antec 1200. Yes of course it could be a lot cheaper. (Not that i have to tell you) but this academic year was really hard so i thought why not go for some luxury ...you know

I know you don't want watercooling, but this is tightly sealed so you have to be very, very unlucky for it to leak. Also we can see more of the Rampage III Extreme since it would be covered by a massive CPU cooler
But out of the two you mentioned, I say the Noctua.

I hadn't seen a warped board in a while, but before backplates quite a few and some with serious curls going on, and they still worked and were many years old . This was more to do with over tightening than weight. I've seen this recently with a backplate though, and again this wasn't weight it was too tight. When fitting a cooler if there's screws of any kind you have to tighten I'd say look at the board from the side and make sure the board isn't bending. This board had the only seeing 4GB of 6 problem, after loosening the cooler and reseating the CPU (had to check it was done right) the problem was solved, I can't say for sure what action fixed it though. Now Graphics cards are another thing altogether!

The thing with Alfa Romeos is you and everyone else gets to admire its prettyness everytime you use it. A PC motherboard sits in a box, and even if that box has a stupid window, you still aren't going to sit and stare through it admiring your 'pretty' mobo. And it's a mobo - it's not really pretty is it? Certainly no Alfa Romeo.
You say you can afford it, but can you really? 1200 euro is not a massive budget, and if you ***** so much on a silly benchmarking mobo you are going to make massive compromises in CPU, GPU, no SSD etc etc - things that make an actual difference to performance. Back to the car analogy - you're wasting money on neons, shiny wheels and plastic bodykit bits when you could be buying a turbo instead.
You're associating concepts such as beauty and luxury with PC hardware! Come on get real! When your games are chugging along much slower than they could be, will a glance through your case window at your 'pretty' mobo make you feel all better?

Well i had a zalman extreme cpu cooler on my i7 920 cooled it like a beast ( better than a H50 corsair, as i had both) and that thing is HUGE and it was no problem. As stated above you get backplates included so it takes the stress off the motherboard.
