Heavy Air Coolers - Could they damage motherboard

Mechanical by profession but a studied electrical.

The thing with Alfa Romeos is you and everyone else gets to admire its prettyness everytime you use it. A PC motherboard sits in a box, and even if that box has a stupid window, you still aren't going to sit and stare through it admiring your 'pretty' mobo. And it's a mobo - it's not really pretty is it? Certainly no Alfa Romeo.

You say you can afford it, but can you really? 1200 euro is not a massive budget, and if you ***** so much on a silly benchmarking mobo you are going to make massive compromises in CPU, GPU, no SSD etc etc - things that make an actual difference to performance. Back to the car analogy - you're wasting money on neons, shiny wheels and plastic bodykit bits when you could be buying a turbo instead.

You're associating concepts such as beauty and luxury with PC hardware! Come on get real! When your games are chugging along much slower than they could be, will a glance through your case window at your 'pretty' mobo make you feel all better?

We all have your best interests at heart really. We care :) :p

1200 Euros is only for Motherboard, CPU and RAM

Good luck with whatever you decide Wenzu hope it all goes with hassle and at the end of the day all of us occasionally make choices others cannot see the logic too but we do it anyway part of being an individual. As i said as long as you don't intend to go lugging your pc about any of the coolers for sale now will be fine so worry not m8.

Heavy cpu coolers are Perfectly fine the only problems is if u go to events such as lans that you have to make sure the computer isnt rolling all over the place or it may get damaged....

I remember years ago when Zalman first started making coolers which exceeded intel/amd's weight recommendations. All the reviews had stuff saying "be careful..... you might kill your mobo".

Well, that was about 6 years ago, and I've never heard of somebody killing their mobo with a heavy cooler.

Wow:eek: Ok then. If you really really can't think of anything better to do with the money - like transferring some of that budget to the GPU, peripheral, or display departments (27"?, IPS?, multi display?), or going on holiday or something, then buy buy buy and enjoy :) I'd be surprised if you really really honestly can't think of anything better to spend the money on though ;).

Going back to the water cooling briefly. I know you've dismissed it outright a couple of times but it really doesn't seem you've given it much reasonable thought. As an engineer I'm sure you can appreciate that just as these heavy coolers are properly designed and tested to be fit for purpose and not snap a mobo in two, so are these all-in-one water coolers designed to not p*ss water all over your system. In fact I dare say there is about as much chance of a H50 or similar actually leaking as there is of a heavy cooler actually snapping a mobo. So dont dismiss them out of some irrational 'ooh water and electricity dont mix' fear. I assume you are quite happy with kettles, electric showers, dishwashers, for example :p.

Soooo true ... yet still if I do not feel 100% confident I would not go for that product. I know it is not rational but that is the way I am. Anyway it seems that I have decided to rule out the water cooling and thats it ( It is time to start taking decisions)

Thanks for your sincere feedback

(I have a budget of 1200 Euros - for which i have worked pretty hard this year - so i want to enjoy them)

I totally understand your sentiment there and why not, enjoy it!. Why do you think people by a Porsche or a Ferrari, they are totally impractical and the car is way beyond the capabilities of most drivers but we all dream of owning one.

one slight word of warning from the original gadget freak. There is always a new / better, faster, cooler, gotta have it gadget just around the corner and believe me it is heart breaking when in not very long what was the ultimate is now worthless junk you cant give away.

I would sincerely advise you save a few of your hard earned pennies for the gadget just around the corner and reduce the heartbreak of obsolescence in the future.
